Girls golf: Highland's Elizabeth Coleman medals at Brunswick Tee-Off Classic

CUYAHOGA FALLS — Highland ace Elizabeth Coleman continued the red-hot start to her senior season Tuesday. The Ball State commit and reigning Gazette MVP beat Magnificat's Calli Reed and Korrine Knaze by three strokes to earn medalist honors at the Brunswick Tee-Off Classic at Brookledge Golf Club with a 3-under-par 68. It was Coleman's second round breaking 70 and earning medalist in as many days. "I've put a lot of work in to get ready for the high school season," Coleman said. "I'm really excited for this season. Golf season is my favorite time of the year, and all of my friends are on the team this year. "I'm glad it's starting off pretty good." Coleman led the Hornets (324) to fourth place, three strokes behind Walsh Jesuit and one ahead of fifth-place New Albany. Brunswick took sixth with a 332, led by sophomore Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble's 75 that tied for eighth individually. The Blue Devils topped Hoover by six strokes. "I'm really excited to play with our new team this year," she said. "We're working really hard to bring our personal scores down to help the entire team. Everyone seems like their in a good mood, and we're trying to stay pumped." Magnificat (294) ran away from runner-up Olentangy Orange (311) for the title, with all four scoring Blue Streaks finishing among the top 11 individuals. Led by senior Lily Zimmerman, Medina (374) finished 13th, four strokes behind Solon. Zimmerman (88) rebounded from a rough start in which she was 6 over through three holes. Highland's Miley Tylicki and Brunswick's Emma Gonzalez-Ribble were the next Medina Countians after Coleman and Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble, tying for 18th with 80s. Starting on the 10th hole, Coleman recorded the first of four birdies on the 282-yard, par-4. She eagled the 421-yard No. 16 to highlight her round. After a solid drive on the edge of the fairway, Coleman stuck a 5-iron from 160 yards over a tree and to within 15 feet of the pin. She sank a downhill, left-to-right putt from the fringe. "I put a lot of work this summer, especially on my wedges and putting," Coleman said. "That has really shown. My game is feeling good right now. Throughout the season, hopefully it will just get better and better the more we practice and play." Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble also birdied her first hole, the 394-yard, par-5 No. 1, but entered the turn with a 4-over 39. She credited coach Chad Thompson with helping her adjust her mindset and play the back nine even, including birdies on Nos. 11, 14 and 16. The 11th and 16th were par 5s, while No. 14 was a 72-yard par 3. "When I came off of hole 9, I was a little upset, because I just lipped out for par," Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble said. "Coach Thompson came up and told me, 'You're going to shoot four under on the back.' That didn't happen, but I finally got some birdies to help out with how I was doing." Tylicki, one of five seniors in the lineup for the Hornets — including Coleman, Mirabella Shelton, Allie Miller and Kate Vickerman — birdied the 127-yard sixth and 277-yard No. 13. The birdie at No. 13 had her at 1 under until a double bogey on No. 15. "I'm feeling pretty good, but I'm not going to lie. I want to shoot in the 70s," Tylicki said. "I was hitting it pretty well, but there were just a few misses. I'm feeling confident going into the rest of the week and think low scores are still going to come." Emma Gonzalez-Ribble carded her only birdie of the round on the 331-yard ninth. She continues to adjust to the high school game after helping Brunswick score a school-record 306 at the first Greater Cleveland Conference Tournament on Monday with a 76. "I was playing a lot of U.S. Kids and stuff, but I think this is better," she said. "Now I've got a team that can help cheer me up and stuff.
