Training Camp Log, Day 8: Joe Flacco wins day with red zone TDs

QB TRACKER: Kenny Pickett was back after missing three practices with a hamstring injury but was held out of team drills.That left all those important repetitions again for Joe Flacco and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.Kenny Pickett returns to practice, won't participate in team drillsFlacco had the best day, including a couple of touchdowns in the red zone. He connected with receiver Jamari Thrash on a crossing route despite safety Ronnie Hickman holding Thrash's jersey. Flacco also zipped one to tight end Blake Whiteheart on a cross in the back of the end zone.Gabriel, who again got some time with the starting offense, struggled, especially in the red zone. He was intercepted by cornerback LaMereon James on a tipped ball that should've been intercepted by safety Nik Needham.Sanders was a bit better, with his best plays a cross to receiver No. 39 and an in to tight end Brenden Bates.TALKING TACKLING: After tackling to the ground Wednesday for the first time in coach Kevin Stefanski's six seasons, there were no live periods Friday. Stefanski wouldn't say if there'd be tackling again in camp but explained why he added tackling this year.Greg Newsome II healthy and off to strong start in pivotal year, ready to embrace larger role"Every year you're looking at what your football team needs, where you are from a bunch of different perspectives and feel like that was the thing that we wanted to do," he said.CAMPERS OF THE DAY: A couple of cornerbacks took advantage of extra snaps. James had a breakup on the goal line in addition to the interception, and Cameron Mitchell picked off a pass in a one-on-one drill.PLAY OF THE DAY: It wasn't an interception, but cornerback Greg Newsome II came close and got the breakup with blanket coverage of receiver Jerry Jeudy on a throw from Flacco down the left sideline.
