Training Camp Log, Day 7: Shedeur Sanders takes first reps against No. 1 defense

QB TRACKER: Shedeur Sanders still hasn't been given a repetition with the first-team offense through the offseason program and seven camp practices. He took a step closer Wednesday when he had his first plays against the No. 1 defense.Greg Newsome II healthy and off to strong start in pivotal year, ready to embrace larger roleSanders worked with the No. 2 offense — the early team drills were twos vs. ones — for four plays. He threw an incompletion on a pass behind undrafted rookie receiver Luke Floriea on a crossing route. Sanders rolled right, and safety Ronnie Hickman got a hand on the ball. After a running play, Sanders hit undrafted rookie receiver Gage Larvadain on an in and undrafted rookie receiver Cade McDonald on an out with cornerback Greg Newsome II in coverage.Dillon Gabriel was first up with the second team and also got a series with the starting offense vs. the second-team defense — he threw three incompletions, including an overthrow that was dropped by cornerback LaMareon James.Joe Flacco continued to get the vast majority of the first-team reps with Kenny Pickett out with a hamstring injury. His best throw was a crossing route to receiver Kaden Davis as he rolled right.Tough times: Browns tackle in practice for first time under Kevin StefanskiJACK'S BACK: Camp is different this year for right tackle Jack Conklin. He's not returning from a major injury — like the knee reconstruction in 2023 — and hit the ground running."Oh, it's great," he said. "I feel fantastic. It's nice to be out here with the guys getting all the work in in these days where we're really building the chemistry and going through the tough times and couldn't be happier."Defense dealt another blow, as Martin Emerson Jr. out for season with torn Achilles, will have surgeryCAMPER OF THE DAY: Cornerback Denzel Ward. The breakup of a pass intended for receiver Cedric Tillman was nothing unusual, although it happened in a one-on-one period in which the receiver has a huge edge. Ward also broke up a hook to rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. in a team drill.The Pro Bowler does that all the time. What was special for Ward on this day was a "sack" when he blitzed from the outside and would've gotten Flacco. Ward provides daily reminders he's one of the best in the business.PLAY OF THE DAY: Gabriel lofted a perfect pass to Davis on a deep corner route to beat cornerback Anthony Kendall. Davis shows up nearly every day and is a strong contender for a roster spot.QUOTE OF THE DAY: "It's great. You want to struggle. The camp is a struggle anyway, but the more struggle you can get … you really don't find out who guys are until it's tough into the game, you are on a long drive and really see how guys mentally are holding up.
