One dead, five injured in I-71 crash in Westfield Township

WESTFIELD TWP. — The State Highway Patrol Medina Post is investigating a fatal crash involving a commercial vehicle. The fatal crash occurred Monday night at 7:20 p.m. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2020 Nissan Armada was traveling southbound on Interstate 71 near milepost 208 in Westfield Township when it hydroplaned and lost control. The Nissan went off the right side of the road and struck a commercial tractor-trailer parked on the right shoulder. The Nissan was operated by Jessica R. Broyles, 41, of Springfield, Missouri. Broyles was transported to Akron General Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The Nissan was occupied by Broyles' husband and their four children at the time of the crash. Ryan L. Broyles Sr., 42, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ryan L. Broyles Jr., 20, was transported to Akron General Hospital with serious injuries. Three minor children with minor injuries were all transported to Akron Children's Hospital. The commercial vehicle hit in the crash was operated by Adrienne Y. Carpenter, 38, of Newport, Virginia. Carpenter was uninjured. Medina post troopers were assisted by the Medina County Sheriff's Office, Westfield Township Fire and Rescue District, Wadsworth Fire and EMS, Lodi Fire and EMS, Seville Fire Department, Medina County Coroner's Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Lloyd's Towing and World Towing. The southbound lane of Interstate 71 was closed for about an hour as a result of Monday night's crash, which remains under investigation.
