Training camp starting as rookies arrive in Berea — with one key exception

Browns rookies are reporting to training camp Friday.All except running back Quinshon Judkins.The second-round pick remains unsigned after being arrested Saturday in Florida on a misdemeanor charge of battery/domestic violence. While it's not a surprise he's not in Berea, it is newsworthy.Veterans are required to report Tuesday, and the first full-squad practice is Wednesday. Whether Judkins signs by then and participates remains to be seen.Judkins, the No. 36 pick out of Ohio State, was one of 30 second-rounders across the league unsigned at the start of the week. But with teams starting to report, several signed or agreed to deals Thursday and Friday.As the fourth pick of the second round, Judkins and the Browns were waiting to see how much guaranteed money went to pick No. 35, Nick Emmanwori of the Seahawks. Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger, the No. 33 pick to start the second round, agreed to a fully guaranteed four-year contract in May, after Houston's Jayden Higgins got a fully guaranteed deal at No. 34.Emmanwori got a fully guaranteed deal Thursday night.While the Browns and Judkins, 21, were waiting, he got arrested. The serious allegations of the incident — his girlfriend said he punched her in the chin, arm and leg — became the priority. The Browns continue to gather information. He was released on bond Sunday and faces discipline from the NFL.While Judkins is expected to sign eventually, the arrest could hurt his leverage in negotiations.The rest of the rookie class reported Friday, headlined by defensive tackle Mason Graham, the No. 5 pick out of Michigan. Fans will get their first look at him on the field next Friday during the first public practice.Quarterbacks and players dealing with injuries were also expected to report Friday.The Judkins' situation casts a pall over the start of the march to the regular season.He was drafted to be the workhorse in a running game expected to anchor the offense, replacing fan favorite and four-time Pro Bowler Nick Chubb, who signed with the Texans after the draft. Judkins spent one year at Ohio State, rushing for 1,060 yards and 14 touchdowns as he helped the Buckeyes win the national championship. He spent two years at Mississippi before transferring.In his three-year college career, he rushed for 3,785 yards and 45 touchdowns.If an NFL investigation finds the allegations accurate, Judkins faces a multigame suspension. Browns defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., a second-round pick out of Ohio State last year, was suspended for the first five games of 2024 after a domestic incident at his home in Avon.If Judkins misses time, Jerome Ford would likely be the starting running back, with rookie fourth-rounder Dylan Sampson and Pierre Strong Jr. getting more playing time.
