Commentary: Shedeur Sanders pays speeding tickets, needs to learn from those mistakes

Shedeur Sanders had an impressive offseason on the fields in Berea.The popular and polarizing quarterback took a wrong turn when he hit the Northeast Ohio roadways.Before Sanders, 23, and the rest of the Browns rookies could be dismissed for summer break, he made headlines this week after being issued a pair of traffic tickets within a two-week period.Shedeur Sanders cited for driving 101 mph on freeway in StrongsvilleDriving 101 mph, which is what the Strongsville Police said he registered on the radar just after midnight Tuesday on I-71 North, is bad enough. Going 41 mph over the speed limit endangers others on the road. Reaction time is reduced and passing slower traffic creates problems.More troublesome is that the citation in Strongsville came 12 days after he received one in Brunswick Hills on June 5 for going 91 mph in a 65 mph zone, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.He didn't learn from his mistake.This is a cardinal sin with coaches. I can't count the number of times coach Kevin Stefanski and his assistants have praised young players for making an error only once. Coaches don't have the time, or patience, to keep repeating themselves and teaching the same lessons.New offensive line coach Mike Bloomgren embraces connection to Bill CallahanThe final piece of the Sanders' road woes was the failure to appear in court Monday regarding the first ticket. He finally took care of it Friday, paying $269 in fines and closing the case, according to the Medina Municipal Court website.He also settled the Strongsville citation, paying a $250 fine, according to the Strongsville Mayor's Court website.Sanders didn't talk to reporters Thursday night at the David Njoku Celebrity Softball Game at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake. He did receive a warm welcome from fans and took responsibility for the driving problems."I've made some wrong choices," Sanders said on the field in a video shared by @GucceCU on X. "I can own up to it. I've made some not great choices (in life). I learn from them."That's the right thing to say. And he'll need to keep owning up and learning if he's going to reach his vast potential in the NFL.The Browns have shown they don't overreact — sometimes barely react — to off-the-field issues of their players. Two speeding tickets don't rise near the level of some of those transgressions, but members of the organization surely addressed them with Sanders.The spotlight isn't leaving him. He shouldn't do anything negative to increase its intensity.He's got a huge following on social media, is the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders and went through a public and historic slide during the NFL Draft, going from potential first-rounder to being taken in the fifth round.Until the traffic violations he had appeared to do everything right since the Browns traded two picks to move up to end his free fall.He spoke at schools, worked out with area high schoolers and engaged with children at a youth camp.During practices he threw it well, taking advantage of the repetitions he received despite being fourth in the rotation that included veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and rookie third-rounder Dillon Gabriel. He showed good timing and ball placement, hallmarks from his days at the University of Colorado.In his meetings with the media, he came across humble and willing to wait his turn and earn his opportunities."In every aspect I view things as I got time," he said during minicamp last week. "I got time to be able to grow and mature and be able to understand the ins and outs of the defenses and be able to get the good insight from the vets in the room."So I look at it as a plus. I got time to actually be able to really have a great understanding and whenever it's time for me to play, then it's time for me to play. But I'm not looking too far in the future about all that."The speeding tickets may not be forgotten when he returns for training camp next month.
