Shedeur Sanders not sweating spot in QB rotation, says he's 'got time' to grow and learn

BEREA — Shedeur Sanders has consistently been last in the rotation of the four healthy Browns quarterbacks during the offseason program.That's quite the adjustment for someone who started all 50 games he played in college.Myles Garrett expects to have his best season, accepts responsibility that comes with his power"I'm managing it real well," Sanders said Tuesday after a mandatory minicamp practice. "Overall it's a mentality. It's mental. It's a lot of people in certain situations in their own life that may not be at the forefront, that maybe had that at one point in time, but you got to know it's going to be bright days eventually. Whenever the time comes."So you just always got to be prepared and you got to mentally take it as just experience. And anything in life, you got to go through different things so you can understand the message that God's trying to give you. So that's why everything I'm way more grateful for, just to come out here, to be able to throw the ball around and just be able to get on the field. Everything off the field, it is what it is, but everybody know when it's time to get on that grass then you know who I am."Sanders, whom the Browns traded up to draft in April after he slid into the fifth round, has spent much of his time on the second field as the coaches split the team for seven-on-seven drills to get the four quarterbacks — Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Sanders — as many repetitions as possible. Sanders has thrown it well in the five practices open to reporters since he arrived for rookie minicamp.He continued the strong performance Tuesday with a long touchdown down the right sideline to undrafted rookie receiver Gage Larvadain, an out route to Larvadain, an in to receiver Diontae Johnson, a hook to tight end Brenden Bates and an in to Larvadain near the goal line to end practice. "You can view things as you're not getting reps in a negative way or you could view it as, OK, when it's my time to get out there, let's be proactive and let's get warm, let's get going so there's no excuses."Because when you get out there, nobody cares how many reps you got. Whenever you get in the game, nobody cares if you took a snap before. Everybody cares about production. He's taking a patient approach."My goal is to be the best teammate and to be as positive as I can be," he said. "So in every aspect I view things as I got time. I got time to be able to grow and mature and be able to understand the ins and outs of the defenses and be able to get the good insight from the vets in the room."So I look at it as a plus. I got time to actually be able to really have a great understanding and whenever it's time for me to play, then it's time for me to play. But I'm not looking too far in the future about all that. I'm looking about every day in practice. I had some misses out there today that we got to go in there and correct about reads, getting in and out of drops a little bit faster from under center. So that's the main thing. "Getting closer to God and definitely talking to him consistently, having a real relationship with him."He later explained a post from Monday night on X: It's a spiritual war going on. Trust in GOD"When you sleep you're most vulnerable," he said. "So then that's when I got real bad. I got God talking to me in that time. And I'm able to recognize that because before pro day was the same thing. So that's how I know I'm on track. That's how I know I'm living in my purpose and I understand everything happened for a reason."So I just got a message that night and I had to sleep with my flashlight on last night.
