Assessment work begins at former Yost Sunoco site

MEDINA — After sitting vacant for several years, work has begun at the former Yost Sunoco site. Medina Economic Development Director Kimberly Marshall said work started on Monday, with contractors pumping out the underground tanks and drilling the concrete. "They will be on site this week and work will continue to progress," she said. "We're really excited to get that project underway." In November, the Medina County Port Authority was awarded $300,000 through the Ohio Department of Development's Brownfield Remediation Program to complete an environmental assessment at the former gas station site, 426 W. Liberty St. The city initially applied for the program in early 2024. Marshall previously said the budget estimate for the project is $400,000. With the $300,000 from the Brownfield Remediation Program, the city will provide the remaining $100,000 for the project. The assessment will determine the contamination levels at the site, where underground gas and oil tanks may pose risks. Once the assessment is completed, the results will determine the city's next steps, which could include tank removal and the remediation for the site's future use.
