College Notes: Highland's Owen Wendl gets MAC outdoor track honor

Akron redshirt junior Owen Wendl earned the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Men's Most Outstanding Field Performer after winning league titles in the discus and shot put. Wendl won the shot with a throw of 60 feet, 2.5 inches, the second-longest throw in program history. He added a 200-10 in the discus, 11 inches short of the meet record. The Highland alumnus went on to finish 20th in the discus (176-5) and 35th in the shot put (57-2.75) at the NCAA Division I East Regional Preliminary. Men's track and field Sophomore Wyatt Royster (Black River) took fifth in the steeplechase (9:52.56) to help Malone win the National Christian College Athletic Association championship. Akron freshman Isaac Baltic (Cloverleaf) took second in the pole vault (17-0.25) at the MAC Championships. Women's lacrosse Slippery Rock junior Leora Owings (Medina) earned NCAA Division II Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association third-team All-America after recording 133 draw controls, 25 goals, 22 assists, 31 caused turnovers and 41 ground balls. Freshman Abby Cassidy (Medina) finished second on John Carroll with 47 goals and 67 points. She was third with 20 assists. Women's track and field Graduate student Madison Miles (Brunswick resident/Padua Franciscan) and the Mount Union 4x400-meter relay finished third in 3:42.85 at the NCAA D-III Championships. Walsh sophomore Alyssa Stoner (Cloverleaf) took second in the 5,000 (17:29.00) at the Great-Midwest Athletic Conference Championships. Pitt-Johnstown sophomore Ellie Zuro (Wadsworth) took third in the 400 hurdles (1:03.17) at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. Kent State senior Andrea Filote (Highland) took sixth in the 100 hurdles (13.87) at the MAC Championships. Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Addie Beck (Wadsworth) won the pole vault (11-5.75) at the Spire Last Chance Meet. Akron freshman Sophia Spencer (Cloverleaf) finished second in the 5,000 (19:34.36) at the Northeast Ohio Open. Western Illinois sophomore Colleen Johnson (Medina) took fourth in the pole vault (12-4.75) at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships. Women's golf Junior Ari Kaser (Wadsworth) earned second-team All-PSAC honors after leading California (Pa.) with an 83.8 18-hole average and seven top-10 finishes. Baseball Senior Jake Scherette (Brunswick) earned second-team All-G-MAC honors after leading Ohio Dominican in batting average (.313) and triples (3) while also finishing second in slugging percentage (.469) and on-base percentage (.429). Otterbein graduate student Jamie Perebzak (Wadsworth resident/Walsh Jesuit) was named honorable mention All-Ohio Athletic Conference after hitting .301 with eight doubles, five home runs, 28 RBIs and 31 runs. Ohio Northern sophomore Kyle Callahan (Brunswick) finished the season hitting .316 with 15 RBIs, 24 runs and six stolen bases. Westminster sophomore Quinn Marquis (Highland) hit .284 with five doubles, three triples, 17 runs and 17 RBIs. Softball Malone freshman Jessie Crookston (Wadsworth) finished the season hitting .313 with three doubles, two triples, one home run, 12 RBIs and 18 runs.
