District track: Cloverleaf girls finish second

ORRVILLE — The Cloverleaf track and field teams moved back to Division II for the first time since 2019, and that proved beneficial Saturday as the girls finished second at Orrville Division II District. Cloverleaf finished with 128.5 points at Red Rider Stadium, behind only Norwayne (153), which moved up from D-III. Defending champion Firelands (98) was third. The Colts were led by seniors Sarah Kelly and Kierston Campbell, along with junior Payten Shetterly. Kelly won the 100-meter dash in 13.13 seconds, Campbell won the long jump at 17 feet, 3 inches and Shetterly was the class of the pole vault field by 16 inches at 10-8. Kelly and Campbell also teamed with Kayla Shook and Taylor Munchick for Cloverleaf's other first in the 4x100, which held off Elyria Catholic in 51.0 to advance to the Austintown Fitch Regional. Kelly, Shook and Munchick teamed with Brooklyn Cavey for a second in the 4x2 (1:47.94) behind Firelands (1:44.68). "It was really fun. It was a big change from last year," Kelly said. "We were at Brunswick last year (for districts). It's a big change of scenery. It was very fun to run against some different people. Everyone moved up a couple places that we were seeded moving into it. Everyone was definitely fighting for their season today. That definitely pays off in the long run. "Individually, my performances weren't the best, but it got the job done. For regionals, we just need to keep doing what we're doing. Keep fighting for it and see what happens." Campbell was pleased with the efforts of her teammates as well. "The weather hasn't been good all season, but today was a beautiful day," she said. "We came out and we competed the best that we could. Everyone gave their efforts. It worked out for us. We do everything as a team. It's not just one individual person, and that brings us together in every single race that we do. "We definitely focus on keeping it as a team just, because no matter if it's an individual race or a relay, you're doing it for your team not just for yourself. Even for our families, too. We're all one community." Cloverleaf also got a second from the 4x4 of Shook, Katie Wershing, Samantha Porter and Brooklyn Cavey (4:12.69), which placed behind Firelands (4:08.75). Senior Emma Hibler was a key contributor with a distance triple. Hibler was second in the 3,200 (12:13.41) after earlier qualifying with a fourth in the 1,600 (5:33.22). In between, Hibler was ninth in the 800 (2:36.14). In addition, Hibler teamed with Wershing, Porter and Julia Reusch for a fourth-place qualifying spot on the 4x8 (10:34.55) Thursday. "The goal Thursday was to get as many kids to the finals as we could," Cloverleaf coach Garth Gucker said. "I thought the kids in the finals today competed very well. We maybe didn't have as much depth as what we've used to the last couple of years. The girls stepped up and did more events than what they've done in the past. They had a lot work on their shoulders. They were willing to do it for the team. I'm super proud for their desire to put the team in the best position that they could for a district championship. They did a lot of extra work. "Our sprint crew has been very deep. I'm very proud of Emma Hibler. To do three events for a distance runner in one day, plus the (4x8) relay on Thursday, that's a lot." Cloverleaf senior Ben Myers came through for a regional berth with a third in the 800 (2:00.77). Myers was also a member of the third-place 4x4 (3:30.96) that included Isaac Smith, Ethan Gray and Reed Kilgore. Senior Clay Combs advanced with a fourth in shot put (52-7.75) — he advanced in the discus (159-9) Thursday — while junior Gavin Forbes barely missed a qualifying spot by placing fifth in the 3,200 (9:54.97).
