High school track: Brunswick riding high after sweep of Medina

MEDINA — The Brunswick track and field teams got a big dose of confidence Wednesday night ahead of the Greater Cleveland Conference Meet and the looming postseason march toward state. The Blue Devils finished the dual conference schedule by sweeping county rival Medina. The girls won going away 92.5-44.5 against a Bees team that rested several athletes, while the boys made a fantastic rally and hung on in the 4x400-meter relay for a 69-68 win. "In past years, (the postseason) has been more anxiety, but this year I think it's time to really prove who we are as the Brunswick track team," senior Autumn King said. "Everybody wants to show off, because we are fast this year. We have a good chance to go to state for multiple events. Everyone is confident, and you can tell." King said she was feeling "extra bouncy" on senior night, as she won the high jump with a personal-best 5 feet, 4 inches. She also helped the 4x2 win in a time of 1:44.00, joined by Zaria Roberts, Kaila Peterson and Taylor Tully. Roberts also won the 400 (1:00.11) and long jump (17-9.25). Kya Swann led the field events by winning the shot put (39-9) and discus (124-0). The boys side was a completely different story, as Brunswick trailed most of the night until senior Santino Diligente (10:08.29) led Luca Brusco (10:10.48) and Corbin Klein (10:10.51) to a sweep of the top three spots in the 3,200 to take a 69-63 lead. "I felt amazing," Diligente said. "I was just trying to pace my teammates sub-10 (minutes). I already knew I was probably going to get the win, so I just wanted to help my teammates out." Diligente was the last of five Brunswick competitors to win an individual event, including Ryder Kern, who grabbed victories in the 100 (10.89) and 200 (21.94). Brunswick swept the top three spots in the 100, with Collin Kavulic (10.94) and Eli Nichols (11.16) following Kern. Nichols also won the shot put (48-2). "It's Medina, our conference rival. We know it's probably going to be us competing for it (at the GCC Meet), so that's added motivation for this meet," Kern said. "I like to treat the Wednesday meets as a chance to compete but also a chance to train. The faster the guys you're running with, the faster you run, and the Medina guys are obviously really fast." The Medina girls will likely look very different next week at the conference meet and into the postseason, as the Bees rested a number of runners. The Blue Devils ran unopposed in the 4x8 to start the meet and again in the 3,200 to grab the maximum amount of points. Also, ace sprinter Brooke Diello only ran one race for Medina, but she certainly made it count, winning the 100 in a school-record 12.05. "I'm feeling pretty good and the weather is nice for once," Diello said. "It's the last dual meet, so it's the last chance for a lot of my teammates to get to run. I'm just enjoying the moment with them. I was really excited this is the only thing I'm running today, so I gave it my all." That win was the second in as many running events for the Bees to start the meet, with Audrey Johnson winning the 100 hurdles (16.80). Medina didn't win another individual event until Ella Bohmer took the pole vault at 10-0. The Bees boys were led by Garrett Shook, who swept the hurdles, beating Kai Piskach in the 110s (14.83-15.79) and 300s (39.78-41.78). They were two of the top hurdlers in Medina County entering the meet. "I'm feeling pretty good," Shook said. "The weather is really good and we've got a little bit of a tailwind today. I really like this track and just wanted to come in and race well." On the girls side, after getting to coast in the 4x8, Olivia Komperda came back in the 800 and took the win easily in 2:30.05 as Brunswick swept top three places with Olivia Petitto (2:33.10) and Abigail Morgan (2:40.37). "I ran the 4x8 earlier, but since Medina didn't have a team, we just jogged it to get the points," Komperda said. "(I didn't) want to push too hard today, because I want to see what I can do Friday (at the Olmsted Falls Kiwanis Relays)." Contact John Urchek at jurchek@medina-gazette.com.
