Second Baptist Church in Medina celebrates 105 years of operation

MEDINA — A local church celebrated 105 years of operation and bringing songs, prayer and the word of God to Medina. Second Baptist Church's congregation gathered on Sunday to celebrate the church's 105th anniversary. The church started as a club in 1919 in the home of William Hodnett before the purchase of a building at 451 Bronson St. for $1,600. The club officially became Second Baptist Church, on Feb. 1, 1920. Since then, the church has grown and expanded its facility. Throughout the church's history, 10 ministers have served as pastors. Arthur Ruffin has served as Second Baptist Church's pastor since April of 2016 and was excited that the church has been around as long as it has. "One hundred and five is amazing," he said. "Just to be a part of 105 is a blessing. Being here nine years, I've seen some different changes and I've seen different people." Ruffin said as the nine years progressed the church has adapted to continue to spread God's message. During the pandemic, the church expanded its technology to spread its message to Zoom and Facebook to reach those unable to attend in person. While the church offers an in-person service at 10 a.m. on Sundays, it also live streams its service at the same time on Facebook. Ruffin said his favorite part about being in Medina is the opportunity to be part of the community and being able to speak for people without a voice, all while promoting unity in everything he does. Sunday's 105th anniversary service featured Pastor Darnell Woods of First Baptist Church of Wadsworth as a guest speaker. During the service, Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell gave a proclamation thanking the church for everything they have done for the community and its collaborations with other city churches and Medina organizations. "The city is only about 211 years," Hanwell said. "The church was here for half that. For 105 years the church has been a beacon of faith, worship and service in Medina guided by dedicated pastors and a steadfast congregation." Hanwell said the church stands as a testament to God's grace through its proclamation of the Gospel, strengthening the community and serving and glorifying the Lord. He thanked the church for their service to Medina. Ruffin said the church will continue to offer itself to the community and its people. "As long as I am here, I want to continue the same things we are doing," he said. "Show up in person, do what God has called us to do and be a blessing to the community."
