Brunswick Hills steering committee reviews draft recommendations for comprehensive plan

BRUNSWICK HILLS TWP. — Brunswick Hills' proposed vision for its new comprehensive plan focuses on recreational and business opportunities while preserving the township's rural character. The Brunswick Hills comprehensive plan steering committee reviewed potential recommendations for the future of the township during its meeting Monday. A comprehensive plan details a municipality's vision for the future. Dan Bowling from Mackin Engineers and Consultants said the recommendations were developed based on survey results, stakeholder outreach and background research. The first recommendation is expanding and promoting community engagement through a range of events and activities, Bowling said. The township could partner with local organizations to put on events. "A lot of this is pretty much spot on with the quote-unquote mission statement that we had when we acquired land in the township for the development of a new (town) center," trustee Ryan Nixon said. "A lot of these things were talked about already, and we're trying to be inclusive of not only our needs as a township but the needs of the residents." Expanding recreational amenities and programming is also suggested, Bowling said. New recreational amenities could go on the newly acquired land, and Brunswick Hills could work with organizations like the Medina County Park District to increase recreational opportunities. It is recommended to preserve agricultural lands and green spaces for environmental stewardship and sustainable development, he said. Brunswick Hills could also lean into agritourism, which resident Linda Hudson said could benefit the township's economy. "Update and refine open space requirements for new developments to ensure the integration of green spaces and natural features into community planning," Bowling said. "Ensure zoning regulations protect sensitive areas by directing development to appropriate locations." Also concerning zoning, Bowling said another recommendation is to review and update the township's zoning resolution to make sure it is consistent with the comprehensive plan and state and federal laws. "All these things are included like assessing permanent uses, dimensional requirements, lot sizes, signs regulations and park and design guidelines to make sure they align with the role of promoting business growth while maintaining community aesthetics and maintaining rural character," he said. Bowling suggested working on attracting quality small businesses to bring economic growth to the community. "Convene township officials, developers and property owners to discuss redevelopment opportunities and streamline zoning and permitting process to help attract new retail and dining projects," he said. "Then promote county, state and regional grants, tax incentives and existing programs to help attract and retain businesses." Increasing communication with residents through a variety of methods like social media, email, the township's website or mail is also recommended, Bowling said. Brunswick Hills could distribute a printed or digital newsletter that features projects, events and resources. The recommendations have not been finalized yet for the comprehensive plan.
