Brunswick Verizon robber sentenced to total of 8-10 1/2 years in prison

MEDINA — A man will serve time in prison for his involvement in the armed robbery at the Brunswick Verizon Wireless on July 16. Sean McCarthy, 28, of Wellsville, was sentenced in Judge Joyce Kimbler's courtroom at the Medina County Court of Common Pleas on Thursday. Medina County Assistant Prosecutor Michael McNamara said McCarthy went inside the Verizon first, went to the bathroom, left, spoke with the other two suspects and then went back inside. The other suspects then entered the building armed with masks on. "The sole employee who is working at the time is bound," he said. "There's a timer on the safe, so they wait for that to go off." Security footage shows the other two robbers removing $100,000 worth of electronics like phones and tablets from the safe while the employee is lying at their feet, McNamara said. McCarthy can be seen bringing items to them like a box and a trash can to put electronics in, and at one point he is holding a gun. "Judge, this is one of the more serious offenses this court might see in a calendar year," McNamara said. In December, McCarthy pleaded guilty to the following charges: Aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony. Kidnapping, a first-degree felony, with a firearm specification. Safecracking, a fourth-degree felony, with a firearm specification. Kimbler said he will serve three years for the firearm specification before any other sentence. He was sentenced to five to 7.5 years for aggravated robbery, five to 7.5 years for kidnapping and 12 months for safecracking, and those sentences will be served concurrently, which means he will serve a total of eight to 10.5 years. "Imagine the trauma to the person laying down on the floor tied up while this is going on all around him," she said. "It wouldn't have gone forward without your cooperation and your work." Bryon Carner, 34, of Cleveland, and Todd Williams, 35, of Cleveland, are accused of being the other two men involved in the armed robbery, and they face the same charges as McCarthy.
