Myles Garrett celebrates 29th birthday by becoming 1st player in NFL history with 14 sacks in 4 straight seasons

CLEVELAND — Myles Garrett keeps doing special things. Unfortunately for the Browns, they can't consistently emulate their star player.With two sacks against Miami in Cleveland's final home game of the season, Garrett became the first NFL player to reach 14 sacks in four straight seasons. "And I'm now seeing my family in a short second and they'll tell me that and try to put a smile on my face, and I'll still be holding onto this L, because at the end of the day we play for wins."The individual stuff is great, it's nice, you want to be remembered for all the above, but cities remember you for wins and bringing championships back home, and that's always been my intention. He holds five of the top six season sack totals in franchise history. He set the record at 16 in 2021, tied that mark in 2022 and for the last two seasons put up 14.Like most players this deep into the season, Garrett is dealing with nagging injuries. He visited the medical tent Sunday but finished the game and asserted he'll be ready to go for the finale against Baltimore."I'm just old," said Garrett, whose birthday was Sunday. "I'm 29. I'm not going to be dragging myself to the finish line. I'll be fine by Friday, Saturday and be ready to go. Always am."Commentary: Browns need a quarterback. Where have you heard that before?Garrett has one more game to outpace Hendrickson for the sack title, something he has yet to achieve.The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year is putting up the kind of numbers that could put him in position to defend the award … if the voters overlook the Browns' record."He's the best pass rusher in the game," left guard Joel Bitonio said. "I think you ask all the players, ask all the coaches, he's probably the guy they fear the most going up against. He's dynamic. He's a special player and I thought he had three tonight, I guess they took one away. He's doing his thing like always and hopefully we can get some stuff around him so he can win some games around here."Garrett is Cleveland's franchise leader in total sacks with 102.5 in 116 games. The next-closest player is Clay Matthews, who had 62. The game Sunday was Garrett's 21st with at least two sacks, and fourth this season.For a second, he had three sacks, as he tackled Miami quarterback Tyler Huntley on the fifth snap of the game for a 9-yard loss. But Huntley fell on a fumbled snap and it was changed to an aborted play, so Garrett only received a tackle for loss. He finished with four tackles, all solo, three for a loss, including the two sacks."He plays hard," coach Kevin Stefanski said. "I think he got really close on a few field goal block attempts, as well. That's a great measure of how hard you're playing, how hard you go on that unit. He made it clear he did not want the Browns to go through a rebuild, saying he's "trying to win right now. And I want that to be apparent when the season is over and we have those discussions."He added at the time he's happy in Cleveland and wants to finish his career here, but for the first time opened the door for a potential exit, stressing he wants to compete at a high level and play meaningful games past January."I don't think about that kind of stuff," Garrett said Sunday. "My mission is to go out there and try to help this team win as a leader, as a brother, as a teammate. That's what I solely focus on. I'm not looking into the future. Next thing on my mind is recovery, looking at film, how can we improve, going to the Ravens and try to play spoiler for them.
