High school volleyball: Wadsworth's Lauren Decker, Rowan Kelly get All-Ohio honors

WADSWORTH — A wonderful November for Wadsworth volleyball standouts Lauren Decker and Rowan Kelly has gotten even better. The juniors were both named to the All-Ohio second team in Division II by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association on Monday, making them the first teammates in Medina County history to receive the honor. Outside hitter Decker ranks fourth in the state with 427 kills and is ninth with a .362 hitting percentage, while setter Kelly is seventh with 812 assists and 12th with 61 aces. Two days earlier, the dynamic duo rallied the Grizzlies to a five-set victory over Olmsted Falls in the Hudson Regional championship match to earn the school its first trip to the state semifinals. Decker and Kelly are just the eighth and ninth county players to be voted onto the All-Ohio first or second team. They join Kacie Evans (2016-18) and Jodi Johnson (2015) as the only Wadsworth selections. The 5-foot-10 Decker has the seventh-most career kills in the county with 1,011 and is the reigning Gazette MVP. She has made two official visits to NCAA Division I colleges as she continues her recruitment process. "Every team we play throws double-blocks at Lauren each time she attacks, but she still finds a way to put the ball down," Wadsworth coach Allyson Wines said. The 6-1 Kelly verbally committed to Ohio University earlier in the fall. She has 1,127 assists in two years at Wadsworth, averaging a county career-record 9.6 helpers per set. "Rowan is the type of player who willingly fits in, but is capable of taking over at any time in a match," Wines said. "We've very fortunate to have both of them on the Grizzlies." The OHSVCA only recognized 17 girls as All-Ohio in D-II, seven of whom will participate in the state tournament in Greater Dayton beginning Thursday.
