Carl Leon Freiberg

Carl Leon Freiberg, 93, of Lodi, Ohio passed away Tuesday October 29, 2024 at JAG Burbank Parke Care Center following a period of declining health. He was born August 9, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan to the late Arthur and Martha (Woolley) Freiberg. Carl grew up in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Edwin C. Denby High School in 1949. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving from 1950 to 1954 on repair ship, USS Atlas ARL-7. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Carl attended Michigan State University where he graduated with his bachelor's degree in 1960, and later, he obtained his master's from Northern Michigan University, graduating in 1967. Carl was a proud Eagle Scout and longtime supporter of the scouts, even helping to develop several troops in Northern Michigan. Carl was employed by the State of Michigan's Park System for several years and then later discovered his true passion of teaching. He was a teacher of science in the Big Bay De Noc School District where he retired in 1987. In 1990, Carl moved to Punta Gorda, Florida. It was there he met his wife Janet, and they married February 21, 2004. In 2014, Carl and Janet moved to Lodi, Ohio to be closer to family, where they were members of the Lodi Ruritan Club and active members of Lodi United Methodist Church. Carl's hobbies included wood carving and knitting. Last October he donated 154 knit stocking caps, each a unique design, to the Lodi Library for distribution. In addition to his beloved wife, Janet; he is survived by his children, Douglas (Red) Starnes (Joyce) of Akron, Jannifer (Bradley) Landrum of Homerville, and Jeffrey Hinzman of Akron. He is also survived by several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret, who passed in 1990. A memorial service will be held at Lodi United Methodist Church, 320 Medina St. Lodi, Ohio, Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 2 p.m. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. Reverand's Don Kuntz and Paige Boyer will officiate. There will be a luncheon immediately following the memorial service. A private burial will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio.
