State Fire Marshal still investigating fatal fires in Wakeman, Vermilion Twp.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is continuing to investigate two fatal fires just outside Lorain County's borders in the past five weeks. The cause of the Oct. 5 fire on Verlin Street in Wakeman that killed a mother and daughter "remains undetermined and is still under investigation," State Fire Marshal spokesman Jarrod Clay said in an email Friday. Also still under investigation is a Sept. 19 fire on Darrow Road in Vermilion Township that killed the homeowner. Clay said he was still waiting to hear back from the lead investigator in that fire if there were any updates. The Huron County Coroner's Office said Cynthia Jackson and her daughter, 12-year-old Nichole "Zoey" Senghas, died in the Wakeman fire. Foul play is not suspected and the house had working smoke detectors, according to the Wakeman Fire Department. In the Vermilion Township fire, a man died Sept. 19 after collapsing off the porch at the scene at 14313 Darrow Road. Multiple attempts to contact the Erie County Coroner's Office to learn the dead man's identity have been unsuccessful.
