Resident escapes, pets die in Brunswick Hills house fire

BRUNSWICK HILLS TWP. — A resident escapee a recent house fire in Brunswick Hills, but several pets died in the fire, according to the Brunswick Hills Fire Department. The Brunswick Communications Center received a report stating a house at the 600 block of Substation Road had flames and smoke coming out the front window at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Brunswick Hills Fire Department, the Brunswick Division of Fire and Hinckley Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the scene. As more calls were received regarding the fire, mutual aid was requested from additional neighboring agencies. Upon arrivals, crews saw an active fire in the front living room area of the single-story brick ranch home. An occupant was already outside of the home, but several pets were still inside. Firefighters stretched hose lines and went inside the home to extinguish the fire and look for the pets. The fire was brought under control and several pets were found. The family's two cats and two dogs died despite efforts to resuscitate them. The home's occupant had minor injuries and was treated at the scene by EMS. The Red Cross responded to the scene to help homeowners with clothing and other personal needs. The Medina County Fire Investigation Task Force is investigating the cause of the fire. No cause has been determined yet. "The Brunswick Hills Fire Department would like to remind the community to verify that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly as we enter the home heating season," Brunswick Hills Fire Chief Anthony Strazzo said.
