High school football: Brunswick hammers Euclid for third straight win

The Brunswick football team throttled Euclid 37-0 Friday in Greater Cleveland Conference play to record the program's first three-game winning streak since 2021. The Blue Devils (3-4, 3-1) got great running from Cooper Neel (15 carries, 104 yards), big plays in the passing game from receiver Hayden Swarm (3 catches, 90 yards) and tight end/H-back Collin Kavulic (1, 57) and steady play from quarterback Sean Barnett (8-for-14, 179 yards). Brunswick end Eli Nichols led a constant, pressure-filled defense that bothered the Panthers (2-5, 1-3) all night. They also got big plays by Brayden Miles, Devan Horay, Brandon Gross and Landen Kirchner, among others. Brunswick's last winning streak of at least this length was a four-game run from Sept. 10-Oct. 1, 2021. That was also the last season the Blue Devils had a winning record, finishing 6-5. Nichols opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a 10-yard sweep on his only carry of the night. It was set up by Barnett finding Neal for a 10-yard catch on fourth-and-2 from the Euclid 20-yard line on the prior play. Nichols disrupted the next two Panthers offensive drives with a tackle for loss and sack of quarterback Kylan Steuball (13-for-24, 165 yards, INT; 9 carries, 11 yards). Neel then scored his first touchdown of the game to put Brunswick ahead 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Horay recovered a fumble by Kei'Shjuan Telfair that set up a 41-yard drive that ended with Swarm scoring on a 4-yard end around. Horay left the game on the next drive after suffering what appeared to be a knee injury. Kicker Vincent DiTeodoro, who split time with Cohen Easa, gave the Blue Devils a 23-0 lead at halftime with a 36-yard field goal after Kirchner blocked a punt to give Brunswick the ball on the Euclid 25-yard line. When the Panthers began driving near the end of the first half, Miles came up with a big pass breakup on fourh-and-4 from the Blue Devils 8-yard line. Another tackle for loss — Brunswick had seven — by John Root disrupted Euclid's first drive of the second half. That led to Neel's second touchdown, a 15-yard run through the right side. Kavulic closed the scoring with an 8-yard run on the Blue Devils' final drive of the game. Euclid was led on the ground by Dante Darby Jr. (8 carries, 30 yards). Darby and Corday Hill each had five catches in the passing game. Hill had 62 yards through the air, while Darby had 50. Colby Orr caught two passes for 41 yards.
