Notes: Another concussion confirmed for Denzel Ward and he remains in protocol

BEREA — Cornerback Denzel Ward officially has his fifth documented concussion since being drafted by the Browns with the No. 4 pick in 2018.Ward, a three-time Pro Bowler, was injured Aug. 12 during practice.Deshaun Watson stops throwing in practice with 'general arm soreness'He hasn't practiced since and remained in the concussion protocol, coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday before confirming for the first time Ward sustained a concussion.He was slow to get up after the back of his helmet, which was covered by a Guardian Cap, hit the ground while defending receiver Elijah Moore on a completion over the middle. Ward didn't leave the field but didn't practice much, if at all, after the play.Ward was outside on the field to watch the entire practice last Wednesday and the end of Thursday's session. But he wasn't on the field Tuesday or Wednesday this week.Pierre Strong Jr. has rib contusion, released from hospital"We have a great medical team," Stefanski said when asked about the volume of concussions for Ward. "We have resources here when guys are in that protocol and I'm confident in that."Ward discussed his history at the start of training camp in late July."I know I got a few concussions, but I don't go out there thinking about the concussions," he said. "I did a lot of research over the season and the offseason on concussions and just how to treat 'em and stuff like that."I'm not too concerned about it going out there. I go out there, play fast, play hard and try to win games. You don't know what's going to happen out there."Kahlef Hailassie has taken Ward's spot with the first-team defense. He was limited to individual drills.** Tight end David Njoku participated in the walkthrough but didn't practice. He looks fine after being slow to get up after a play last week.** Right tackle Jack Conklin and running back/returner Nyheim Hines were among those who worked out under the supervision of athletic trainers as they try to return from knee surgeries last year. Both ran and did movement drills.WHO'S WHERE?Germain Ifedi remained the first-team left tackle with Jedrick Wills Jr. (knee) and James Hudson III (ankle) sidelined. Undrafted rookie Lorenzo Thompson took over with the second team.The coaches also got creative as they try to create depth and versatility on the line.Zack Johnson, who's listed as a guard, played left tackle, right tackle and center. Rookie guards Zak Zinter and Javion Cohen switched sides with the second team for the second straight day — Zinter was on the left and Cohen on the right.EXTRA POINTSRookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. got repetitions with the first-team defense. The second-round pick out of Ohio State was charged with domestic violence last week.** The Browns signed linebacker Marvin Moody (6-foot-1, 240 pounds) and waived linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle with an injury designation.
