Dustin Hopkins agrees to three-year, $15.9 million extension

During the calm before the storm of training camp, the Browns took care of some important business.Kicker Dustin Hopkins agreed to a three-year, $15.9 million contract extension Monday, a league source confirmed to The Chronicle-Telegram.Hopkins, 33, had a historic season last year, his first with the Browns. He set a franchise record with 33 field goals, surpassing Phil Dawson's 30 in 2008.Zone Coverage PodcastHopkins also set an NFL record with five straight games in which he made a field goal of at least 50 yards. He finished the year 8-for-8 from 50 yards, 33-for-36 on field goals overall and 24-for-26 on extra points.Training camp begins next week.Hopkins was acquired after the preseason in a trade with the Chargers, who received a seventh-round pick in 2025. He replaced Cade York, a fourth-round pick in 2022 who struggled throughout the preseason.The Browns re-signed York this offseason, but Hopkins' extension makes it clear the Browns plan on him being their kicker for the foreseeable future. He was set to enter the final year of his deal, worth $2.875 million, before the extension.At $5.3 million a year during the extension, Hopkins ranks tied for fifth among NFL kickers. Baltimore's Justin Hopkins and Philadelphia's Jake Elliott are tied at the top at $6 million a year.Hopkins' first season in Cleveland ended prematurely. He sustained a torn hamstring Dec. 24 against the Texans unsuccessfully chasing kick returner Dameon Pierce on a touchdown. Hopkins wasn't able to return three weeks later for the playoff loss in Houston.Hopkins was originally a sixth-round pick of the Bills in 2013 out of Florida State.
