High school track: Medina sweeps Brunswick in GCC tune-up

MEDINA — In the last league dual before the Greater Cleveland Conference Meet next week, Medina's boys and girls track and field teams swept Medina County rival Brunswick on Wednesday. The girls won 79-58, while the boys pulled away for a 99-38 victory on senior night. "Today's a great day to compete," Medina's Garrett Shook said of the team's mindset. "Let's go fast and take our momentum into conference, into district, into regional. It's great to get some training reps and go fast against other guys." Shook, who qualified for the Division I state meet in the 110-meter hurdles last season, swept the 110 and 300 hurdles in 15.34 and 41.89 seconds. The girls were led by returning 100 hurdles state qualifier Lauren Dawson, who won that event in 14.92 and helped the 4x100 relay come out on top in 51.21 as the anchor behind Mackenzie Hartman, Michaela Gwinn and Taylor Nichol. "We're kind of winding down to where it all comes together," Dawson said. "It's an exciting time of year and kind of nerve-wracking. I'm excited to see what our team can do." The Brunswick girls were led by two-event winners Kya Swann, who swept the shot put and discus in 33 feet, 9.5 inches and 105-9, and Ava Snider, who won the 300 hurdles (50.66) and high jump (4-8) in a pair of personal bests for the hard-charging senior. "It's my last time ever running the 300 hurdles since I'm a senior, and I wanted to give it everything I had," Snider said. "I wanted to PR today. It didn't matter what place. I honestly didn't think I was going to win, but I saw the two girls in my peripheral and gave it everything." On the boys side, Brunswick's Chris Johnson broke his personal record in the 100 (county-best 10.80) and helped the 4x1 that included Collin Kavulic, Armel Robinson and Landen Case come out victorious in 42.26. Johnson, Case and Robinson qualified for the state meet last season in the 4x1. Johnson and Robinson also qualified in the 4x2. "It's always great to come out and compete against Medina," Johnson said. "We have a nice, friendly rivalry, I'd say. It feels good to run against some of the best guys in our conference." Brunswick also got a win and a PR from Eli Nichols in the discus (126-6) and a victory by Connor Pugh in the pole vault (13-0). Also helping the Medina girls to a win was Marcie Patilla, who set PRs while winning the 100 (12.34) and 200 (25.87), and Ruth Schmeller, who won the 800 in 2:25.88 ahead of teammate Alanya Yanmaz's personal-best 2:27.55. Ella Bohmer won the pole vault (9-6). "I think we're really on a good path right now," Schmeller said. "Our 4x8 is doing really, really well." Along with Snider, Brunswick saw a number of girls establish PRs. Zaria Roberts took the long jump (16-9.5), Reese Nolan won the 3,200 (12:36.35), Marissa Miller came out on top in the 400 (1:04.08) and Kylie Lockwood won the 1,600 (5:43.73). "The sun was shining in my eyes, so it was kind of hard to focus," Lockwood said. "I just tried to push myself, because I knew I was going to be by myself from the start. I always try to pick it up on the back straight, because the wind will try to slow you down." The Medina boys got PRs from Dylan Forster, who took the shot put by extending his large county lead to 57-4.5, and Jackson Riffle, who won the 200 in 22.43 and helped the winning 4x200 (1:30.78) that included Jack Wojciak, Grant Noftz and Evan Browne. Austin Knowles and Riley Dworznik also won twice. Dworznik took the 3,200 (11:04.78) and was on the 4x8 (9:21.48) with Jack Smith, Andrew Mosack and Nick Colosimo, while Knowles went 6-0 in the high jump and 20-10.5 in the long jump. Andrew Bugner won the 1,600 (4:34.69), Evan Kotick took the 800 (2:05.79) and Emerson Lindsley won the 400 (52.17). "I started out strong, but there's a point in the race where you feel the suffering and you feel the pain," Lindsley said.
