Arbor Day Foundation selects Medina for two awards Medina was named as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters. The award began in 1981, and Medina has received it every year since then. The designation recognizes effective urban forest management. The program's four requirements are: Maintaining a tree board or department Having a tree care ordinance Dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita Hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation Medina also received its seventh consecutive Tree City USA Growth Award, which goes to communities that demonstrate environment improvement and a higher level of tree care. Fair Housing Awareness Day The Medina County Fair Housing Office held a Fair Housing Awareness Day event on Friday in which guest speaker Vera Boggs from the Ohio Civil Rights Commission gave a presentation on the fundamentals of fair housing. Guest speaker Kathy Kraus will speak about how enslaved people during the Civil War traveled the underground railroad using "code quilts." The public is invited.
