Lt. Gov. Jon Husted tours Medina County Career Center

MEDINA — Lt. Gov. Jon Husted visited the Medina County Career Center on Monday, meeting with instructors and students from numerous programs. Husted joined MCCC administrators and Medina County Sheriff Terry Grice for a tour of the campus to learn more about what the Career Center offers its students. Husted said that he, along with Gov. Mike DeWine, has been trying to expand the career-technical programs throughout Ohio. "Career tech is the best value in education because you earn job skills, credentials and even college credits while you're in high school," Husted said. "Employers are knocking at the door, ready to hire students that come out of places like the Medina (County) Career Center." Husted visited nine programs at the school, including criminal justice, diesel technology, allied health and pre-nursing and power equipment technology. Husted spoke with instructors about what the courses offer students. Additionally, he talked with students about their experiences in the program. Husted said that to keep Ohio's economy moving forward, the state must have the workforce to support it. "In Ohio, we are creating more jobs than we have people to fill them," he said. "Our economy is really growing, and employers don't need college graduates as much as they need people with technical skills." Husted said Ohio wants to have the best workforce in the United States and believes the way to complete that is through career-technical schools like the Medina County Career Center, both on the high school and adult education levels. With career-technical schools, Husted said everyone wins. Students gain a range of skills that will help with job opportunities and employers get the talent needed to keep up the workforce. "I would encourage every student to consider career tech even if you're planning on going to college because the skills that you can earn here allow you to earn and learn at the same time," Husted said.
