High school basketball: Medina's Olivia Klanac named district player of the year

The awards keep coming for Medina girls basketball player Olivia Klanac, as the junior guard was named Northeast Inland District Division I Player of the Year by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association this morning. Also the Greater Cleveland Conference co-Player of the Year, the 5-foot-9 Klanac averaged 19.5 points while leading the Bees to an 18-4 record during the regular season. Medina reached the Medina Division I Regional final before falling to Magnificat in its furthest tournament advancement since 1982. Klanac highlighted another year full of honors for Medina County, as she was joined on the D-I first team by Brunswick senior Journey Hildebrand (5-11, 20.5) and Highland junior Kennedy Morgan (5-8, 17.6). Black River career scoring leader Riley Kubitz (5-7, sr., 21.1) was a second-team choice in D-III. Honorable mention was awarded to Highland sophomore point guard Grace Shondel, Medina senior forward Izzy Kurka, Wadsworth senior forward Brooke Baughman and Grizzlies senior center Lyla Wilson in D-I, Cloverleaf sophomore point guard Evie Barth in D-II, Black River senior forward Zoey Bungard in D-III and Medina Christian Academy sophomore forward Ashley Conwill in D-IV. On the boys side, the county picked up three first-team selections. Brunswick leading scorer Quinn Barnett (6-2, sr., 19.8) and Wadsworth career scoring leader Maxx Bosley (6-0, sr., 26.2) were selected in D-I, while Cloverleaf center Logan Forbes (6-9, sr., 19.2) was runner-up to Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy's LaVelle Sharpe for D-II Player of the Year. Second-team awards went to Brunswick point guard Trey Drexler (6-0, so., 16.9), Blue Devils forward Tommy Morgan (6-5, sr., 13.7) and Highland center Hunter Winston (6-4, sr., 14.1) in D-I and Medina Christian Academy guard R.J. Walgate (6-6, fr., 15.3) in D-IV. Honorable mention featured Brunswick junior center Aidan Shaker, Highland senior guard Maddox Albright, Medina senior forward Brock Beech, Bees center Connor Smith and Wadsworth senior center Finn Schmitt in D-I, Cloverleaf junior point guard Marty Moran and Buckeye sophomore center Turner Dolata in D-II and Black River senior guard Johnny Kray in D-III.
