Medina County's initial unemployment claims are just above 100

MEDINA — Initial unemployment claims for Medina County totaled slightly more than 100 last week, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. There were 106 initial unemployment claims received in Medina County for the week ending Jan. 27, which is 27 fewer claims than the previous week. Initial claims for the county have ranged between 100 and 200 since the beginning of December. The current four-week average for Medina County is 134 initial claims. This time last year, for the week ending Jan. 28, 2023, the county had 129 claims. Lorain County's initial unemployment claims also fell last week. There were 221 initial claims submitted in the county for the week ending Jan. 27. It is 73 fewer claims than the week prior. Weekly initial claims for Lorain County have been gradually falling since December. The peak occurred in the week ending Dec. 23, when the county had 573 initial claims. The monthly average for Lorain County is approximately 304 initial claims. A year ago, the county had 265 initial claims for the week ending Jan. 28, 2023. Unlike Medina and Lorain County, initial unemployment claims for all of Ohio increased slightly last week. There were 9,795 initial claims sent in throughout Ohio as a whole, which is 238 more claims than the week before. The state's initial claims have been less than 10,000 for the past two weeks. The four-week average for Ohio is about 10,284 initial claims. Last year, the entire state had 7,948 initial unemployment claims for the week ending Jan. 28, 2023. Continued unemployment claims for all of Ohio rose last week as well. Nearly 62,000 continued claims were accepted throughout the state for the week ending on Jan. 27, which is 1,280 more claims than the previous week.
