Three area players on All-Ohio soccer teams

Medina County had five honorees when the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association released this year's All-Ohio teams. Medina was the only school with a boys and girls honoree, with midfielders Cole Turchyn and Addy Cusick making the first team. Highland sophomore Vanessa Zufall also was a first team selection in Division I. Brunswick senior midfielder Evan Horner was a second-team selection for the boys D-I team and Cloverleaf senior forward Riley Evans was a second-team choice in D-II. Turchyn, who was named Greater Akron District Player of the Year last week, led the Bees to the state semifinals for the second straight year before Medina again fell to eventual state champion St. Ignatius. Turchyn scored 10 goals with eight assists and was especially impressive in scoring both goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over Highland. Cusick led the Bees to the district finals with 16 goals and eight assists. She scored once and had two assists in three postseason games. Zufall was Medina County's second leading scorer behind teammate Grace Shondel. She had 21 goals and 15 assists in leading the Hornets to the program's first district championship. Zufall assisted on Highland's second goal in a regional semifinal loss in penalty kicks to eventual state semifinalist Strongsville and converted her PK try. Horner led the Blue Devils in scoring with nine goals and five assists. State runner-up Archbishop Moeller's Bradley Poppell won the boys D-I player of the year, while Lakota West's Rick Cooper was the coach of the year. Walsh Jesuit's Hannah Pachan was the girls D-I player of the year and Perrysburg's Jorge Diaz was the coach of the year. Evans once again led the Colts in scoring with 21 goals with 14 assists, ranking third in the county with 56 points. Rocky River's Sophia Sindelar and coach Patrick Hopkins earned the top awards on the girls side in D-II. Revere's Dylan Halm and coach Nick DePompei were the top award winners on the boys side after leading the Minutemen to the state final before losing 2-0 to Tipp City Tippecanoe.
