Buckeye High School student of the month for November Edwin Ortiz is the Buckeye High School student of the month for November. He has maintained a 4.5 GPA and takes advanced placement, honors and college credit plus courses. He is on track to be a four-year academic letter winner and a recipient of the summa cum laude distinction at graduation. Ortiz engages in environmental and societal initiatives as a member of the ODNR Conservation Teen Advisory Council and the Ohio Attorney General's Teen Ambassador Board. He volunteers at the Medina County Probate and Juvenile Court Diversion program and as a teen mentor for Huddle. He also earned outside recognition as an Eagle Scout and junior assistant scoutmaster. Local craft shows happening today There will be a holiday craft show at St. Ambrose Church at 929 Pearl Road in Brunswick from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature homemade items by local artists, homemade food and Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. The marketplace at Heartland Community Church will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3400 Weymouth Road in Medina. There will be local makers, artisans, bakers, food trucks and live music. A craft show and bake sale will happen at Remsen Christian Church at 1500 Remsen Road in Medina from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be over 40 crafters. The Christmas by the River craft show will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Black River Education Center on County Road 40 in Sullivan Township. More than 80 vendors will display seasonal decorations, jewelry, handcrafted items and more. The price of admission is a nonperishable food item. Hickory Ridge Elementary School student wins online art competition Hickory Ridge Elementary School student Mila Hisczak recently won Artsonia's artist of the week contest. It is an online voting competition. She received more than 900 votes for her art that depicts flowers inspired by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. "I felt proud of my great work," Mila said. "It meant a lot to me." Her teacher Shari de Wever has been teaching art for more than 22 years. She said she has a passion for working with children and sharing her love of art with them. "Artsonia has benefited our art room in multiple facets," she said. "It shows the growth of the artist over the years and provides an opportunity for families near and far to see what we are making in the art room." Blick Art Materials donates a $100 gift certificate to the winning school and an $50 gift certificate to the student artist who wins the weekly contest. "Our mission at Artsonia is to bring communities together to celebrate children's artistic expression," Artsonia CEO and co-founder Jim Meyers said. "Artist of the week is a perfect way to get local schools, families and friends involved in the process of creating, recognizing and cherishing student art."
