Work to resume on new Mill Stream Park courts

LIVERPOOL TWP. — Work should soon continue on the new courts at Mill Stream Park after the project was put on hold because the asphalt was incorrectly poured. The project consists of installing two pickleball courts, a volleyball court and repairing the existing basketball court at the park. Trustee Sean Lackey addressed the delays with the project that was intended to be completed a few months ago during the most recent trustees meeting on Tuesday. The township hired TNDK Tennis Resurfacing as the contractor for the project. He said Montville Township officials recommended the contractor after doing a good job on courts within the township. TNDK hired a subcontractor to install the asphalt, and the work was not done correctly for the pickleball courts, Lackey said. TNDK has now removed the original asphalt and will apply more asphalt for a new court. The pickleball courts are estimated to be finished within the next few weeks. Next, the contractor will work on the basketball courts by doing work such as sealing cracks, he said. The Medina County Prosecutor's Office recommended the township hold off on working on the volleyball court until the rest of the work is finished. Vice Chair Cathy Keller asked how the township is sure that the project will be done correctly this time around. Lackey said people from the township will be watching the work be done from now on. A variety of factors affected TNDK's ability to complete the project, such as having a labor shortage and rainy weather, he said. "We just want to make sure that they do what they are contracted to do," Lackey said. "We're going to work with them to get it done properly, and that's all we can do right now." In February, the trustees approved using its American Rescue Plan Act funding to put in the courts and grade the sites. At the time, Fiscal Officer Debbie Gillin estimated the courts would cost more than $150,000 to put in. In total, Liverpool Township received about $550,000 in ARPA funding, and used a portion of it to purchase turnout gear and other pieces of equipment for the Valley City Fire Department.
