Assistant Allyson Wines named Wadsworth volleyball coach

WADSWORTH — Continuity has been key to Wadsworth extending the longest streak of winning seasons in Medina County volleyball history to 19. It's now Allyson Wines' turn to take the baton. Wines, who has spent the past four seasons as an assistant with the Grizzlies for both Mallory Adams and Jeff Walck, has taken over as their head coach. "I have loved Wadsworth volleyball since the day I got here in 2019 as the freshman coach, so I'm super excited to be leading this program," said Wines, who played four years at Walsh Jesuit and two more on the University of Akron club team. "The community, families, other coaches and school administration have been so supportive, it really just feels like home." Wines becomes the third straight Wadsworth assistant to be promoted to the top spot. Then-freshman coach Adams took over in 2021 following the two-season run of Walck, who previously worked under Jill Klingbeil. In a fun note, the coach who began the streak in 2004, Jen Greenlees, has rejoined the program as its junior varsity coach. "I'm really happy to have Ally take over, as she's been a valuable assistant for the past four years," Grizzlies athletic director Brad Musgrave said. "She's extremely knowledgeable about volleyball, has a good rapport with the girls and has had nothing but success coaching our JV and freshman teams." Adams stepped down after piloting Wadsworth to a share of the 2022 Suburban League National Conference championship and appearance in the Maple Heights Division I District final. The former standout middle blocker at Highland and Malone University went 31-17 at the helm. "These girls deserve a coach who can put forth all the time and energy that the job entails," Adams said. "I am working hard as a multiple disabilities intervention specialist (within the Wadsworth schools), and those kids mean so much to me. I want to make sure I am bringing my best self for them in the classroom." Wines is well known within the local volleyball community from her ongoing work as a club coach for Nova Juniors. A strong proponent of mental preparation, the Akron resident and Cleveland Browns fanatic is in her 14th season on the sideline. The Grizzlies only return two starters from their 17-9 squad that tied Brecksville, Hudson and Twinsburg for the conference crown, but they are strong offensive threats in sophomore Lauren Decker and senior Rachel Dunkle.
