Jim Ingraham: Naylors off to a good start in the Cleveland baseball brothers club

Now that Bo Naylor has officially patented the "Naylor 360" jaw-dropping, caught-stealing, throw-out pirouette at second base in Kansas City that blew up Twitter Tuesday night, this might be a good time to open the nominations for greatest brother combo in Cleveland baseball history. I'll go first: It's not the Naylors, but it's early. If they both stick around long enough, who knows what kind of further magic Cleveland's Canadian clubbers might yet unleash? The graceful footwork of Bo's "Naylor 360" oozed Fred Astaire and, don't forget, Josh sometimes smashes his bare head into the helmeted noggins of unsuspecting associates just for the fun of it. How can you not dig a guy like that? Both Josh and Bo have most of their careers ahead of them, and the Kelce brothers are in trouble if this is just the opening act. For those scoring at home, there have been 11 sets of brothers who have played for Cleveland's American League Baseball Club. The Naylors are the most recent, but they make up for it by being the only Canadians. Here, in no particular order, are the other 10 brother combos who have graced Cleveland baseball's sporting scene. Interestingly enough, there has never been triplets who have played for the local nine. Sandy (1990-2000) and Roberto Alomar (1999-01) As a player in Cleveland, Sandy was a six-time All-Star, a one-time All-Star game MVP and the 1990 American League Rookie of the Year. After an 11-year career as a player in Cleveland, this is his 14th year as a coach. Roberto only spent three years in Cleveland as a player, but what a player. In 1999, when he should have won the MVP award but didn't, he hit .323 with a .422 on base percentage and .533 slugging percentage. He added 40 doubles, 24 homers, 120 RBI, 37 stolen bases, 99 walks and led the AL in both sacrifice flies (13) and runs (138). Bill (1907-09) and Harry Hinchman (1907) Bill played outfield, first base and shortstop (not simultaneously), and he got hit by a pitch a league-leading 15 times in 1907. That same year, Harry, a second baseman, didn't get hit by any pitches. Gaylord (1972-75) and Jim Perry (1959-63, 1974-75) They combined to win 529 games in their combined 39 years in the majors. In 1970 with the Twins, Jim went 24-12 with a 3.04 ERA and won the Cy Young Award. In 1972 with the Indians, Gaylord went 24-16 with a 1.92 ERA and became the first Cleveland pitcher to win the Cy Young Award. Jolbert (1998-02) and Orlando Cabrera (2011) On Aug. 5, 2001, the Indians were trailing Seattle 14-2 in the seventh inning. Cleveland then scored three runs in the seventh inning, four in the eighth and five in the ninth to tie the score at 14. In the bottom of the 11th, Jolbert singled, scoring Kenny Lofton with the winning run. That same day, Orlando Cabrera, playing for Montreal, went 0-for-4 in a 4-1 loss to Houston, but he was very happy for his brother. Herbert (1994-96) and Chan Perry (2000) Herb had a nine-year career in the big leagues, all but six of them with Cleveland. Chan had 25 career at-bats, split between Cleveland and Kansas City. Joe (1920-30) and Luke Sewell (1921-32, 1939) When Indians shortstop Ray Chapman died after getting hit in the head by a pitch from Yankee pitcher Carl Mays in the middle of the 1920 pennant race, Harry Lunte replaced Chapman. When Lunte got hurt, 21-year-old Joe Sewell was called up from the minor league New Orleans Pelicans. Sewell hit .329 and helped Cleveland win its first World Series. Joe Sewell was also famous for not striking out. From 1925-33, Joe averaged one strikeout every 115 plate appearances. Luke Sewell, a catcher, averaged one strikeout every 19.6 plate appearances. Vean (1911-14) and Dave Gregg (1913) Vean was a pitcher who won 23, 20 and 20 games from 1911-13. Brother Dave, also a pitcher, didn't win any games in his one-inning career. Dick (1957-59) and Larry Brown (1963-71) Larry was the Indians' everyday shortstop through most of the 1960s. Dick was a backup catcher for Cleveland from 1957-59. Jesse (1903) and George Stovall (1904-11) George was a hot-headed infielder who once got into an argument with Cleveland manager Nap Lajoie. Lajoie fined Stovall $50. An incensed Stovall told Lajoie to double it. Lajoie did, and Stovall replied by throwing a chair at Lajoie's head. Jesse was a pitcher who in his two-year career had a record of 7-14 but never threw a chair at anyone. Joey (1998) and Alex Cora (2005) Infielder Alex had a nice 14-year career as a player. He hit 35 career home runs, all but 34 of them for Cleveland. Infielder Joey's last major league at-bat came with Cleveland, vs. Minnesota on Sept. 27, 1998. He struck out looking.
