Mosquito sample tests positive for West Nile virus The Medina County Health Department received confirmation that a mosquito sample taken from a surveillance trap at Susan Hambley Nature Center in Brunswick has tested positive for the West Nile virus. The positive mosquito sample does not involve any human cases. As part of a statewide mosquito surveillance program, the health department collects weekly mosquito samples at locations throughout the county. Mosquitoes infected with West Nile are identified each year throughout Ohio, and human infections can occur after the bite of an infected mosquito. The health department recommends residents prevent mosquito bites by doing the following: Use repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para methane-diol when outdoors. Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn. Have good screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out. Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying or replacing standing water regularly. The health department treats road ditches, storm sewers and catch basins throughout the entire county. Other private and public properties are also a part of the treatment plan. The health department uses environmentally friendly larvicide and pesticide. Medina Community Band to have Juneteenth concert Medina Community Band will present its third concert for the 2023 summer gazebo series on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Uptown Park gazebo in Medina. The concert will be celebrating Juneteenth with special guest speaker the Rev. Arthur Ruffin. The featured euphonium soloist will be Lodi resident Clayton Von Doren, who will perform Edward Montgomery's "Serenade" from Mirror Lake. Darren LeBeau will conduct "Duke Ellington (Tribute)" and Karl L. King's "Voice of America."
