OutSupport hosts third annual pride event in the Medina Square

MEDINA — People came to the Medina Square to picnic, listen to live music, receive resources, make art with chalk and socialize as part of OutSupport's third annual pride event on Thursday. OutSupport is a local group that was founded by mothers of LGBTQ+ children who were looking for ways to support their child. The organization's mission is to continue to provide support and resources for LGBTQ+ people and their families. "OutSupport has provided, coming up on 10 years of support, advocacy, resources and information for families looking for that and individuals looking for support in the community," OutSupport Founder Sandy Varndell said. "We're happy to provide that here in Medina." Along with OutSupport, many other organizations like businesses, churches and government agencies gathered in the square on Thursday to provide resources, information and pride-related items to attendees. "The whole point of this is to have fun and have a relaxing evening among friends," Varndell said. "Know that everybody here is an ally and supports you." Medina Ward 3 Councilperson Regi Haire also gave a short speech in order to welcome the crowd and acknowledge the many people who were there. "Today and especially this month, we are celebrating the right to live one's true life without fear or intimidation and to celebrate those who are out, afraid to come out, questioning and allies," she said. "You are all valued members of our community, and we are so happy that we are altogether today to celebrate the LGBTQ+ members of our own community." Varndell encouraged all attendees to introduce themselves to other people at the event in order to better form a community of people who can be there for one another. "The very first thing I want to say is that for any young person listening now, we love you," she said. "We see you, and we will do everything we can continue to do to make it a better place (and) a better world for you as you grow."
