Brunswick City Schools' Issue 4 passes

BRUNSWICK — The bond issue that completes Brunswick Schools' master facilities plan mainly by constructing a new Brunswick High School passed in Tuesday's primary election, according to unofficial election results. Issue 4 is a 3.3-mill bond issue that will last 37 years. The bond issue passed after failing in the November election. The number of people who voted for the bond was 4,542, or approximately 53 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, 3,976 people, or nearly 47 percent, voted against the bond. The funding for the bond issue will go toward: The demolition of the current Brunswick High School, Towslee Elementary School, Willetts Middle School and the existing maintenance building. Construction of a new high school with features like a 1,000-seat performing arts center, a multipurpose field with synthetic turf, tennis courts and a full-size baseball field. Building a new maintenance facility and board of education office in the area where Willetts Middle School is located. Adding classrooms and making site improvements for traffic patterns at Applewood and Kidder elementary schools. The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission approved about $42.6 million in funding for the district to build a new Brunswick High School. Approximately $102 million will be raised locally for the bond, which would go toward a new high school and the locally funded initiatives. The owner of a $100,000 home will pay $84 per year. The Brunswick Board of Education voted earlier this year to defer collections on the bond until 2025. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2024, and a new Brunswick High School would be open for the 2026-27 school year. "With the passage of Issue 4, our work now turns to visioning and planning," Brunswick Schools Superintendent Jason Niedermeyer said in a statement.
