Bob Finnan: Enjoy this Cavs' ride because who knows how long it will continue

Cavaliers fans should savor this moment. The Cavs are headed to the postseason, and it's anything but an annual event. Fans should have learned they can't take things for granted in Cleveland. There are no guarantees they'll return to the playoffs next year, even though things look promising. There are unforeseen obstacles, such as injuries, contract squabbles and discontent. Everything is going smoothly right now. The players love playing with one another, love playing in Cleveland and love playing for Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff. The Cavs haven't been to the playoffs since LeBron James' final season with the Cavs in 2017-18. After he left for a second time, things unraveled. But it's a new day in Cleveland. There are many things to look forward to on the horizon. The Cavs are young, hard-working and exciting. It's a bring-your-lunch-pail-to-work kind of team, one fans in Cleveland can relate to. The transformation started last year when the Cavs challenged for a playoff spot. They would have made it, too, had center Jarrett Allen not broken his left middle finger and missed the last 18 regular-season games. When the Cavs traded for Donovan Mitchell in September, the expectations heightened considerably. He certainly lived up to his advanced billing. It's nice having a superstar player who can take over games, much like the aforementioned James. Mitchell has a strong supporting cast, and this team is capable of winning its first-round playoff series. That would be a wonderful accomplishment for the Cavs, as would winning 50 or more games. Before our emotions spiral out of control, that will likely be the ceiling for this team. A second-round opponent like Milwaukee, Boston or Philadelphia would be highly favored against the Cavs, but they won't be an easy out. The Cavs will fight down to the last second against any of those foes, but their opponents just have too much firepower, shooting and superstar talent. There are things working against the Cavs in the postseason, starting with their lack of playoff experience. Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Isaac Okoro will be making their playoff debuts. They will have a wide-eyed approach to the playoffs, which normally doesn't translate into success. But don't count them out. It's going to be exciting, and fans should eat it up. Watching Mobley continue to grow before our eyes certainly is intriguing to watch. He's going to be a major force soon — if not right now. The sooner Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman can sign him to a contract extension, the better. He'll soon be eligible for major dollars, and the Cavs can't allow him to reach free agency. The team might be built around him in the very near future. Much will be on the shoulders of Altman in building this club into a serious contender. Finding a way to keep everyone happy and under contract is going to a challenge moving forward. This team is not "whole" just yet and another major piece is needed to take the next step forward. The Cavs still don't have consistent shooting, another big might be needed, as well as more depth.
