February student of the month for Buckeye Nick Kutz is Buckeye High School's student of the month for February. He is a member of the Great Lakes Conference Honors Band, National Honor Society, Academic Challenge, Student Council, 4-H Sharpshooters and American Sign Language Club. Buckeye said he was selected because he embodies the Portrait of a Buck characteristics, which he displays when he gives back to the school and the community. He said his favorite high school memory was being a member of the state qualifying marching band his junior year. He thanked his parents for supporting and encouraging him. He will graduate in May and plans to attend the Ohio State University. MCDL Snuggle Up and Read program The Medina County District Library has hosted the Snuggle Up and Read program for the past several winters. The program consists of donating pajamas and age-appropriate books in a large bin at all MCDL locations. In December, patrons and staff donated enough pajamas and books to make 74 sets. Volunteers at Buckeye Library sorted the pajamas by size, matched them up with appropriate books and bagged them for donation to the following agencies: Medina County Head Start Preschool Birthcare of Medina County Children's Center of Medina County Catholic Charities Pancake breakfast and spotlight on students After a three-year hiatus, Medina City Schools hosted its community pancake breakfast and "Spotlight on Students" on Jan. 21 from 8 a.m. to noon at Medina High School. As part of the annual event, student artwork was on display, and there were a variety of student performances from all grade levels from 9 a.m. to noon in the Performing Arts Center on the main stage. There was an appearance from Medina High School's show choir called Encore Entertainment Company as well. Scholarships available to Medina County Career Center and Medina High School graduates The Mike Kovack Family Community Fund is offering $1,000 scholarship opportunities to graduates of the Medina County Career and Medina High School this spring. Funding for the $1,000 scholarships comes from donations to the fund from community members throughout the year and a grant from the Kovack family. The career tech scholarship shall be awarded to one senior graduating from a career technical program at the Medina County Career Center who plans on furthering their education in a career tech field. The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of sincerity in furthering one's education, grades, student citizenship and involvement in school and the community. Financial need will also be considered. The Medina High School scholarship will be awarded to a student who exemplifies being involved and giving back to the community. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of involvement, achievement and general worthiness in the view of the selection committee. Applications may be submitted to the Mike Kovack Family Community Fund, 110 W. Homestead St., Medina, OH 44256. Applications will be accepted until March 31. Hinckley Women's Club offering scholarships The Hinckley Women's Club will offer two financial assistance scholarships to eligible Hinckley residents for the fall 2023 semester. The scholarships, worth $1,000 each, can be used for books or tuition and will be presented to the winners at the April Hinckley Women's Club meeting. The scholarship is open to Hinckley residents currently pursuing a post-high-school training program or to any resident planning to attend college in the fall. Post-high-school training could be business school, technical school or college. Scholarship applications will require a cover letter listing the applicant's name, address and phone number along with the school they are planning to attend and the area of study. Applicants also need to submit a typed one-page essay of no more than 500 words addressing the following topics: Career goals and the plan to achieve them Community involvement Academic achievements Work experience, both paid and volunteer Extracurricular interests The application is available at hinckleywomensclub.com. The final day for applications is March 15, and applications received after the date will not be considered.
