Issue 12: Avon residents to have their say whether property on Nagel Road should hold houses or businesses

AVON — Voters throughout the city will decide whether 8.58 acres of land across the street from Meijer grocery store on Nagel Road will be rezoned from residential to commercial use. The property is owned by Discount Drug Mart, but there are no immediate plans for development. "The most concerning issue is that there will be more commercial development in the city," Mayor Bryan Jensen said. "But that area already is surrounded by commercial, so it makes sense." Thirty homes are in the immediate area, and two abut the property in question. "If and when development does take place, the developer would have to include traffic and sound barriers in the project," Jensen said. "Given the area, you can't put a big building there." The C-4 designation is for general commercial. "The reason we put this on the ballot is so residents have a say," Jensen said. "One way or another, it lets us know in advance what residents want. The land lends itself to commercial use, but there could be other issues or concerns. There is already commercial all the way down Detroit Road.
