Labor Day rubbish delay On Monday, Medina City Hall will be closed for Labor Day. Residential rubbish collection will be delayed one day this week. Trash pickup will be Tuesday through Saturday. Individuals can sign up for multiple tours but should leave room for travel time and about one and a half hours per tour. Mayor of Akron and CEO of United Way of Summit and Medina to visit the White House Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and United Way of Summit and Medina President and CEO Jim Mullen will join local leaders from across Ohio at the White House on Wednesday. The White House plans to bring local elected officials and community leaders together to highlight how the Biden-Harris administration initiatives are positively affecting the region. Ohio officials will be the first to participate in the White House's "Communities in Action: Building a Better America" effort. During this trip, United Way will share the story of a partnership with County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Summit County, which has provided $56 million in rent, utility and mortgage assistance to families throughout Summit County. This partnership has helped over 8,000 households in the community remain in stable housing. Cleveland Browns collaborate with Garfield Elementary School students Garfield Elementary kicked off its "Stay in the Game" program for the 2022-23 school year on Aug. 26. This program is done in collaboration with the Cleveland Browns Foundation. The program's mission is to prioritize attendance by connecting students, parents, guardians and staff to resources that help reduce frequent absenteeism. Joining Garfield in the program this year will be Northrop Elementary School, Claggett Middle School and Medina High School, with the goal of making this a districtwide initiative. Medina City Schools Foundation elect officers for 2022-23 As a new school year begins, the Medina City Schools Foundation continues its work to support staff, students and their education. Recently, the officers for the 2022-23 school year were elected. President Ken Stump Vice President Mike Sweet Secretary Laurie Katolac Co-Treasurers Matt Berthold and Chris Racz Ken Stump joined the foundation as a board member last school year and has been a Medina resident since 1995. He and his wife, Michelle, raised their three children, Matt, Nick and Kate, who are all Medina High School graduates. He graduated from Boston University in 1991 with a bachelor of science in business administration and a law degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State in 1994. He has been an attorney with Kastner, Westman and Wilkins, which focuses on employer-side workers' compensation, for the past 26 years. He is a teacher in the Power Kids Program at the Medina East campus of Grace Church in his spare time. Mike Sweet is a 1980 graduate of Medina High School. He has lived in Medina for most of his life with his wife, Susan, and his son Matthew. He has been on the board for the past five years working on one of the organization's largest fundraisers, Run.4.Fun, for the last three years. He owned Sweetlawns, a lawn fertilization and horticulture company, for over 20 years. He now owns SweetWater Pond Services. As an officer of the foundation, he is excited to have the opportunity to give back to the school system which has given him so much. Monarch tagging at Oenslager Nature Center Catch and tag monarch butterflies on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. or on Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Oenslager Nature Center. This contributes to the research on the declining populations. Nets will be available to borrow, and a naturalist will be at the building to identify any butterflies and tag caught monarchs. All ages are welcome. No registration is required for this free event. New impacts of state Route 18 reconstruction State Route 18, from just west of Alber Drive to Nettleton Road, will have single lane closures as crews widen and reconstruct the roadway. Crews will begin paving the east end of the job from River Styx Road to Nettleton Road. By midweek, weather dependent, the west end of the project will also be ready to pave.
