Medina native Mason Schreck cut by Texans, may end up on team's practice squad

Mason Schreck was cut Tuesday as the Houston Texans got down to the NFL's 53-man roster limit, but the 2012 Medina High graduate is expected to be signed to the team's practice squad this morning. A vested veteran, Schreck does not have to clear waivers before re-signing with the Texans. Not only that, he could be active for the team's Sept. 11 season opener against Indianapolis in Houston, as the Texans have several injuries at tight end. After signing with Houston in June, Schreck finished camp strong, catching two passes for 13 yards in a 24-20 preseason win over the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 19. Included was an 8-yard TD. The 6-foot-5, 252-pound Schreck was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round (251st overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft following his redshirt senior season at the University at Buffalo. He set a school tight end record with 651 yards receiving that year and earned second-team All-Mid-American Conference honors. Schreck spent parts of the next five seasons on the Bengals' roster, injured list or practice squad, but appeared in at least one regular-season game each season from 2018-21. Overall, the 28-year-old has played in 23 NFL games with one start. Also a special teams player, Schreck's best season was 2020, when he appeared in 14 games and made his lone start. Schreck, who has not caught a pass in the regular season, was credited with his lone NFL tackle that year. He also played a career-high 15 offensive snaps in a 37-34 loss to the Browns on Nov. 1. Schreck is married to former Medina classmate and Eastern Kentucky University volleyball standout Ally Peters.
