Medina City councilman accused of making obscene hand gesture after council meeting (VIDEO)

MEDINA — Tensions during Monday night's Medina City Council meeting boiled over leading to one council member appearing to make an obscene gesture toward another in council chambers. At-large Councilman Paul Rose gestured toward fellow Councilman Bill Lamb with what looked to be a middle finger after the two had an exchange of words toward the end of the meeting. The council discussed ways that the deer population in the city could be lowered through lethal and nonlethal means during that night's meetings. Rose advocates for a lethal option while Lamb is arguing for nonlethal. Right before the end of the meeting, Rose said that The Medina Gazette and another publication had not given both sides of the story regarding the deer population. After Rose's comments, Lamb defended the stories regarding the issue and said having a free press is beneficial. Then after the council adjourned, Rose is seen during the last few seconds of the Facebook livestream from Medina TV making a hand gesture in Lamb's direction as Lamb walks away. The alleged hand gesture happened moments after Council President John Coyne said, "Let's be kind to one another." When asked about the gesture, Rose said gave multiple explanations, first saying he couldn't say if he had or hadn't given Lamb the middle finger. He then said he gave a "five-fingered salute" to Lamb. When it was pointed out that only one finger was visible in the video, Rose said he is pointing his pointer finger rather than his middle finger at Lamb, and this was allegedly in reaction to a personal comment that was made to him "That's my pointer finger, and if you notice the frame before, my mouth went agape because he called me stupid," he said. Lamb said he did not know the gesture was made, which he believes to be a middle finger, until after he went home. He said he was disappointed to see that part of the video. "Our behavior matters because it's reflective," he said. "We don't want to be interpreted in a way that's negative because we represent the city." Coyne said he was unaware the situation happened and that he could not comment on it but said the meeting itself went over well. He also said he does not know enough about the situation to determine any repercussions that could happen as a result.
