Rhino calf born at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo A female eastern black rhinoceros calf was born July 9 at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Mom Kibibbi and her calf both are doing well and are bonding behind the scenes for the next few weeks. This is Kibibbi's third calf and her second calf with the father, Forrest. The rhino birth is the first at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo since the opening of the Daniel Maltz Rhino Reserve in 2020. The birth is an important one for the species because eastern black rhinos are critically endangered with less than 750 remaining in the wild. This is largely due to poaching, which supplies the illegal international rhino horn trade, and habitat loss. Zoo guests are invited to help name the calf and support conservation efforts to protect the species. Special Olympics banquet hosted at Veterans Memorial Hall On July 14, AMVETS Post 1990 hosted the annual Special Olympics banquet at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Vice President Rick Pethtel said there were more than 100 guests at the banquet, which included the Special Olympics athletes and their guests. This was the third year AMVETS hosted the event at the Veterans Memorial Hall, and a date is already set for 2023. All of the athletes in attendance received awards and certificates of appreciation. Shelton is a 2018 graduate of Highland High School. He earned a full-tuition scholarship from Otterbein after winning the Honors Scholarship Essay Competition in 2018. Impacts announced for U.S. Route 42/224 resurfacing project U.S. 42/224, from state Route 421 to just south of Congress Road, will have single lane closures for a resurfacing project and bridge deck repairs. The four-lane sections will have single lane closures and the two-lane sections will have signalized lane closures. State Route 42, both north and south, from Congress Road to U.S. 224 will be closed Aug. 1 for 30 days for pavement and bridge repairs. The detour route for northbound motorists will be U.S. 42 to state Route 301, north on state Route 301 to U.S. 224, east on U.S. 224 to the U.S. 42 north/224 east entrance ramp and continue north on U.S. 42. The detour route for southbound motorists will be U.S. 42 to the state Route 421/U.S. 224 west exit ramp and continue on U.S. 224, continue west on U.S. 224 to state Route 301, south on state Route 301 to U.S. 42 south.
