SUV causes dump truck rollover in Chatham Township

CHATHAM TWP. — An SUV driving south on state Route 83 in Chatham Township went left of center and hit a dump truck Thursday morning, according to the State Highway Patrol. The SUV was hauling a trailer with a lawnmower on it. After being struck, the dump truck rolled over and spilled the gravel it was hauling. Chatham Township Fire Chief William Disbrow said fuel leaked from the dump truck, but it was not enough to be hazardous. A material called "cell dry" that is similar to cat litter was used to clean up the fuel because it helps remove slickness from the roadway. The driver of the SUV was flown by helicopter to the hospital with serious injuries, while the driver of the dump truck suffered minor injuries. This crash took place between Spencer Lake and Garver roads. The Ohio Department of Transportation announced about 10 a.m. that this area would be closed. That part of state Route 83 reopened for traffic about 1:30 p.m. Several agencies worked together after the crash including as fire and rescue departments from Chatham, Lodi and Litchfield, the Medina County Sheriff's Office, the State Highway Patrol and the Medina All-Hazards team.
