Brunswick Library kicks off summer reading program with event for kids

BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick Library had crafts, face-painting and a science-themed magic show for kids to kick off its summer reading program Wednesday. Kelly Halleen, children's department supervisor at the library, said this year is the first year with a big return to the summer reading program since the pandemic started. There were more than 400 signups for the program and many of those occurred during the event. "We're just loving it," she said. "Just being able to engage with all the kids and all families coming back in. It's very exciting for us and we've been waiting." The library partners with Brunswick schools for the program, Halleen said. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are required to complete summer reading in the form of a game for school. There are no specific books that students have to read over the summer. "They can read whatever they want," she said. "That's key to avoiding the summer slide, having them read something that they enjoy." When students are finished with their summer reading, they get to hit a gong. Halleen said this tradition is unique to Brunswick. Students also receive a free book. This year's theme is ocean adventures. The event's performer named Mr. Molecule gave a performance that coincided with the theme. He performed a marine-life-themed magic program for kids that taught them fun facts about the ocean. It is important for kids to read over the summer, so they do not fall behind in their reading skills, she said. "We want to strengthen their reading," she said. "We want them to continue coming in over the summer finding books that they love to keep them going." Over the summer, the Brunswick Library will host many children's events, Halleen said. Story times are held at various times of the week to cater to families with all different types of schedules. Also, the library put on a program where eggs were incubated inside the building. The library is currently raising these five chicks that hatched on Memorial Day. "We're not a quiet library, at least on our side, on the kids' side," she said. "We encourage a little bit of madness.
