High school track: Medina boys, girls sweep district meet

BRUNSWICK — The Medina girls track and field team defended its Brunswick Division I District title by swiping the lead from the rival Blue Devils on Friday night. The girls ran away from second-place Strongsville 140-100 to earn the win at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium behind five championship efforts ranging from sprints to distance to hurdles. "Our team is doing so good this year," Medina's Mia Heine said. "We're all doing great from sprints to field events. We're all pulling our weight, and that makes our team as a whole very strong." Heine won the 800-meter run in 2:17.10 ahead of Brunswick's Teodora Iovi's 2:19.38. "I knew coming into the race we'd have strong competitors, but with the times I've been running I knew I could pull through," Heine said. "Even with the wind, I knew that I had it in me. It's a great feeling to go into the (Findlay) regional with a great race to keep the ball rolling." On the boys side, Santino Ramos (800) was the Bees' only individual champion. Medina flipped last year's placing with Brunswick, 131 1/3-100. Ramos won in 1:59.13 ahead of Cloverleaf's Andrew Hibler (1:59.24). "I knew coming in that it was going to be pretty windy, so I laid back on the home stretch (the first lap) to let them take on the wind for me," Ramos said. "I knew it'd be safer to pass on the back stretch, and then I just took it home." Competitors battled winds that consistently reached 20 mph, making things especially difficult as runners came toward the finish line. Behind Medina on the girls side, Brunswick (86) took third, Highland (65) fourth, Cloverleaf (63) fifth, Wadsworth (51) seventh and Buckeye (2) 12th out of 13 teams. For the boys, Wadsworth (59) came in fifth, Highland (55 1/2) sixth, Cloverleaf (34 1/3) seventh and Buckeye (30 1/3) 10th out of 13 teams. The Colts' Riley Evans was the only competitor to take individual titles in two events, and both were thrilling. She kicked late to pass Medina's Rachel Smith on the home stretch of the 400 (58.63) before pulling off another come-from-behind victory in the 200 (26.54). "The conditions are tough with the wind and everything, but I feel based off of my training that I have the endurance in me," Evans said. "That gives me an extra kick at the end, and that has really helped me today and I'm using it to my advantage. "It's a pretty cool accomplishment (to win two district championships). It's definitely a good experience." Lauren Dawson got Medina off to a strong start in the running events when she won the 100 hurdles in 15.73, barely ahead of Berea-Midpark's Faith Kingsley (15.75). "It feels amazing and is definitely a step up for me," Dawson said. "I'm excited to be there for my team, and it feels good to set the tone and let everyone know Medina is out there." The Bees' only other individual championship came from Jenna Ravazi in the mile (5:14.66), giving Medina three wins over the first four running events. "It's a nice challenge before the regional," Ravazi said. "I know there's going to be a bunch of super great girls there, so to have the challenge of the wind is really helpful in learning to control what I can control. Today I did a pretty good job of that." Ravazi joined Kayla Kutcel, Kayla Perfect and Emily Piehler in closing the meet with another victory in the 4x400 (3:59.99). Perfect joined Smith, Hannah Neiger and Paige Nosse in winning the 4x2 as well. Wadsworth's Ellie Zuro took the 300 hurdles in 46.98 to continue her late-season surge. "In the middle of the season, I was stuck in a rut and not able to get below this time," Zuro said. "One or two meets ago it kind of clicked that I needed to think about going through each hurdle instead of going over it. Ever since, I've been able to run faster." Brunswick got an individual title from Maddy Wyatt, who won the discus by more than three feet with 127 feet, 6 inches. "I had to fight through that wind, because a lot of the discs went up and they came straight to the ground when the wind just took them," Wyatt said. "I'll take that 127 for a windy day with not good conditions. I'm just happy that it wasn't like Wednesday's weather." The Medina 4x1 of Keegan O'Reilly, John Wojciak, Tallon Hulvey and Corbin Derrig joined Ramos in picking up a boys championship. For Brunswick senior Evan Jarold, the story was completely different from Wednesday, when he had to come from behind to help the Blue Devils win the 4x8 relay. Jarold took a commanding lead in the 3,200 and never let go on his way to a winning 9:21.92. "My coach (Owen Coughlin) wanted me to go out fast," Jarold said. "I was hoping for a fast time, but this wind is just horrible. (Teammate Alex Keller) was supposed to hang on for the first mile, but I was looking around for him and knew I was going to be running by myself." Earlier in the evening, Keller won the 1,600 in 4:30.47 after the field did not cooperate with his strategy. "No one wanted to take the lead, because they were all waiting for me," Keller said. "My coach told me to try and stay behind someone for the wind and to win as slow as I could. That's kind of what I did out there." Wadsworth had a pair of district champions in Adam Quinn (100, 11.35) and Jackson Herbert (400, 51.08). "I was a lot more nervous coming into this race than I usually am," Quinn said. "I just tried to stay focused and prepare right for the race, and it paid off. Going into last year I didn't make the regional in the 100, so it was motivation for this year."
