Turner/Exton/Goodman/Cirilllo Jazz Quartet concert in Homerville ORMACO continues its free Sunday concerts with the Turner/Exton/Goodman/Cirilllo Jazz Quartet at 2 p.m. Sunday. The program focuses on the importance of the jazz organ and the development of its role in jazz. The quartet will be playing and improvising music. There will be blues, jazz standards and even contemporary sounds, as the organ's versatility has been explored in all these genres. Medina High names May's Students of the Month Medina High School has named juniors Eve Chester and Ella DiCola as the May Students of the Month. Eve Chester was selected for her leadership and her hard work. Her class schedule consists of advance placement, college credit plus and honors classes. She has earned the Medina High School Academic Distinction Award of summa cum laude during her first and second years. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the current Key Club Treasurer, the Spanish Club Vice President, a member of HUDDLE and a member of the girls varsity tennis team. In her spare time, Eve has volunteered at the Joyce B. Ebner Tutoring Center as a peer tutor, is a referee for the Medina Soccer Association and is a private middle school math tutor. Eve plans on attending college. She is the daughter of Thomas and Deborah Chester. Ella was selected for her character, respect and attitude. Her class schedule consists of advance placement and honors courses. Ella has earned the Medina High School Academic Distinction Award of summa cum laude her freshman and sophomore years. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council Junior Class Representative, debate team, Hope Squad, HUDDLE, Link Crew and part of Junior Leadership Medina County. Ella has been a JV football cheerleader for the past three years and was captain this year. Ella is currently an intern at a local law firm and also babysits and dog sits. She is planning on attending college and would like to go into law. Ella is the daughter of Christopher and Laura DiCola. Medina High School Science Olympiad team wraps up season The Medina High School Science Olympiad Team competed in three invitational, regional and state tournaments this season. Thirteen students participated on the team, which consisted of three seniors, eight juniors and two freshmen. The team competed virtually at the Westlake Invitational. The following event teams received awards: • First place: It's About Time (Alex and Anna Holthouse) • Fourth place: Botany (Anna and Alex Holthouse) • Seventh place: Rocks & Minerals (William Kissner and Alex Holthouse) and Out Write it/Do it (Calista Harden and Anna Holthouse) The Solon/Kenston Invitational was held at Solon High School, where the Out Write it/Do it team placed third. The Mentor Invitational was also in-person. The team received the following awards: • Sixth place: Dynamic Planet (Alex and Anna Holthouse) and Rocks & Minerals (William Kissner and Alex Holthouse) • Seventh place: It's About Time (Anna and Alex Holthouse) Michigan Science Olympiad and Ohio Science Olympiad held a joint tournament for a few events. The team placed third in Detector Build (Andrew Altiere and Elliot Fellows), and It's About Time (Alex and Anna Holthouse). The team placed fifth overall at Regionals, qualifying for state for the 10th year in a row. The team placed 20th overall. The following event teams received awards: • Fifth place: Rocks & Minerals (William Kissner and Alex Holthouse) • Sixth place: Wright Stuff (Tony and Gio Stabile) State Route 3 major rehabilitation updates State Route 3, from just north of Fenn Road to just south of Odessa Road, will have single lane closures for resurfacing work. The signal at state Route 3 and Remsen Road was activated into the full stop-go pattern on Friday. All necessary warning signs and flashers have been installed per plans to inform the traveling public of the change in traffic pattern. The estimated completion date is June 2022. State Route 18 intersection improvements update State Route 18, from Windfall Road to the Medina County line, will have single lane closures as needed for intersection improvement work. The following intersections will be improved: Windfall Road, state Route 94 and Medina Line Road. Crews have begun work on state Route 18 east at Medina Line Road. Southbound traffic on Medina Line Road will be detoured beginning May 23 for construction of the right-turn-lane addition at this intersection. The detour is expected to be in place for 14 days. Motorists coming from state Route 18 will be able to travel north on Medina Line Road but will not be able to travel south. The detour route for southbound motorists traveling to Medina Line Road will be to continue on state Route 18 to Hametown Road south to Ridgewood Road west to Medina Line Road. The estimated completion of intersection work is June 14, 2022. Highland student athletes recognized on signing day Highland High School student-athletes were recognized for recently committing to attend and play sports for their chosen college. They were recognized during a "signing day" program held Wednesday in the HHS Auditorium. • Corey Haney will attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he will join the wrestling team and study engineering. With more than 100 career wins, Corey is an all-state wrestler, four-year letter winner, Greco state champ, freestyle state placer and member of the Ohio National Team. He is the son of Bill and Jennifer Haney of Granger Township. • Griffin Albright will attend the University of Mount Union, where he will play basketball and major in business/entrepreneurship. Griffin is a three-year letter winner, scholar-athlete, Medina County all-star MVP and Medina County Honorable Mention. He is the son of Carl Albright and Lori Towell of Sharon Township. • Baily Tessena will join the gymnastics team at Simpson College (Iowa), where she will study health and exercise science. Baily qualified for the Level 9-10 Regional Championships and placed 10th on balance beam. She is the daughter of Bruce and Stacy Tessena of Granger Township. • Gabi Miller will attend the American International College (Massachusetts) and join the women's rugby team. She plans to major in physical therapy. Gabi was a top scorer on the Highland Lady Buzzards Rugby Team and is a two-year letter winner. She is the daughter of Ross and Kathy Miller of Hinckley Township. • Emily Perhacs will join the women's rugby team at Queen's University of Charlotte. She is currently undecided in her major course of study but will be involved with the ROTC. Emily is a three-year letter winner, scholar-athlete and was named Team Impact Player of the Year. She is the daughter of Mike and Maria Perhacs of Montville Township. • Henry Wilkes will attend St. Bonaventure (New York), where he will join the swim team and study health science. Henry is a four-year letter winner, four-time district qualifier, state qualifier and placed ninth in the 100-yard backstroke at the state meet. He is the son of Mark and Julie Wilkes of Granger Township. • Aaron Filips will play football for Case Western Reserve University, where he will study engineering and business. He was named first team All-Suburban League two times, Suburban League Offensive POY, first team all-district and second team all-state. Aaron is the son of Don and Bonnie Filips of Granger Township. • Dominic Konopka will attend and play football for the University of Connecticut. He plans to major in business. Dominic was ranked as the No. 15 long snapper in the country and named all-Suburban League offensive lineman. He is the son of Mark and Beth Konopka of Sharon Township. • Jon Lima will play football for the University of Mount Union, where he plans to study criminal justice. A two-year starter for the Hornets, Jon was named a Suburban League Honorable Mention. He is the son of John and Melissa Lima of Hinckley Township. • Bryce Turek will attend and play football for Ohio Northern University, where he plans to study manufacturing management. Bryce was a team captain for the Hornets and named second team all-Suburban League. He is the son of Robert Turek and Anessa Gomez of Sharon Township. • Grace Smith will join the volleyball team at Heidelberg University. She is currently undecided on her major course of study. Grace was named first team all-Suburban League two times, first Team All-Medina Gazette two times and received the defensive MVP Award twice. She is the daughter of Kevin and Nicole Smith of Hinckley Township. Ohio Wesleyan announces 2022 spring semester dean's list Ohio Wesleyan University announced its dean's list for the 2022 spring semester. To qualify, OWU students must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in all applicable classes. Watch and note the unfolding of the woodland forest, wildflowers, birds, trees and insects. A notebook is suggested. This event takes place today from 10 a.m. to noon. Full flower moon walk in Hinckley Reservation Naturalist Pam Taylor will guide guests along the trail and identify the most recent blooms the forest has to offer. This event will take place Sunday from 6-7:30 p.m. Wild about eggs at Susan Hambley Nature Center Learn about native egg-laying animals at Susan Hambley Nature Center in Brunswick. Drop by at any time today and Sunday between open and close to explore different types of eggs and the wild animals that lay them. All ages are welcome. No registration is required for this free event. Hike with your dog in Bluebell Valley K-9 Kapers provides dog owners with an opportunity to socialize their pets with other dogs. This hike will take place 3-4 p.m. Sunday. All dogs must have an accompanying adult and eight-foot nonretractable leash. Participants must maintain control of their dogs at all times. Bringing a towel for muddy feet and a water bowl is recommended. All ages are welcome. No registration is required for this free event. Road closures throughout the county The Garver Road Bridge replacement project start date has been delayed until Monday. The road will be closed beginning Monday through June 24, 2022 between Richman and Avon Lake roads. The bridge replacement is approximately 3,000 feet east of Richman Road. Abbeyville Road closure has been extended. The projected completion is now Wednesday. The road will remain closed from Wolff Road south approximately 1,000 feet in York Township. Friendsville Road in Westfield Township will be closed beginning Tuesday through Wednesday between Greenwich and Seville roads for the replacement of a road culvert south of Greenwich Road. Firestone Road in Homer Township will be closed Monday between Black River School Road and New London Eastern Road for the replacement of a culvert north of Black River Road. The following roads are scheduled to have intermittent road construction that began Thursday and will run through May 26. All roads will be open to local traffic, emergency responders and buses.
