Unemployment claims were declining throughout April in Medina County

MEDINA — The initial unemployment claims for Medina County have been gradually decreasing since the start of April, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. For the week ending April 23, 115 claims were filed, which is a decline of more than 15 percent compared with the prior week. The number of initial claims is fewer than the number filed two years ago. During the week ending April 25, 2020, more than 1,250 claims were filed in Medina County. The highest number of initial unemployment claims in Medina County occurred the week ending Feb. 12 with more than 250 claims. The lowest number so far this year was 100 claims, which occurred two weeks later. In no week this year has the number of claims dropped below 100. Statewide, the number of initial claims has also declined since the start of April. This week had slightly more than 8,000 claims. There were almost 10,000 fewer claims filed this week than the week ending April 2. There has also been a drop in continued unemployment claims for the state of Ohio. Just over 40,000 continued claims were sent in this week compared with the more than 50,000 continued claims that were on record two weeks prior. This week has the lowest amount of continued claims of all of 2022. The most recent week that had a smaller number than that was the week of Dec. 11, 2021.
