Eugene Smith

Eugene Smith (Gene to his family and friends) passed away peacefully at his home in Granger on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the age of 81. Gene was a retired Captain of the Cleveland Fire Department and Medal of Valor recipient. He was the beloved husband of Judy (nee Fletcher) for 57 years. Gene and Judy met as a matter of chance through a blind date arranged by a friend. Gene was the loving father of Tina (Daniel) McKeen, Suzy (Matt) Marquis, and Rebecca (Nick) Lott; devoted grandpa of Ryan and Caleb McKeen, Jacob, Logan and Spencer Marquis, and Smith and Cole Lott; younger brother to the late Art (Shar) Smith and cherished uncle to Michael (Monica) Smith, Kimmy (Phil) Gallen, Lisa (Don) Wolfarth, and Renee Stevens. Gene, a 1959 graduate of Brunswick High School, maintained lifelong friendships with several of his classmates. In his younger years, Gene enjoyed buying and selling various cars, especially Corvettes. As a Cleveland Firefighter, he started his career on Rescue-1 and spent a number of years at Engine-33's house. He served the latter portion of his career in pre-plan and as an instructor at the Cleveland Fire Academy. During this time, he was also a dedicated father and husband. He supported his daughters at their activities and filled the house with laughter during family game nights. In his retirement, he enjoyed cooking, working on his scenic property, expanding his numerous hosta gardens, and spending time with his family. Gene will be fondly remembered by his family for his quick wit, sense of humor, card tricks, and love of animals and nature. He was a dedicated family man who enjoyed attending his grandkids' sporting and musical events. It is hard to believe such a wonderful man is gone, but we see him in everything he built and nurtured.
