Arline (Barry) Houghtaling

Arline (Barry) Houghtaling, most recently of Spencer and previously of Wadsworth, is finally at peace after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She passed away Monday, October 18, 2021, at the age of 83. Arline was born September 20, 1938 to John and Eleanor Barry in Brooklyn, New York. She often affectionately reflected on being the protective eldest sister to her three younger siblings, and always felt that New York, New York was her true home. Arline worked at the Bell Telephone Company in New York, Florida, Georgia and Ohio before her retirement. Her generous, loving spirit led her to volunteer her time for Meals and Wheels and the Senior Center in Wadsworth. Her zest for life led her to travel throughout the United States and Europe, including visiting her favorite spots of England, Germany and Ireland, with her dear traveling companion and friend, Nancy Walquist. She loved Italian food, chocolate ice cream and 'spicing up' favorite recipes known by heart. A true Irish and big band aficionado, Arline could often be found singing, dancing and shaking her maracas to the very end. Her spunky and independent spirit will live on through her daughters and grandchildren, while her merry laughter and melodious spirit will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Arline was preceded in death by her father, John; mother, Eleanor and longtime companion, Bernie Kidney. She is survived by her daughters, Lorraine (Randy) Crites of Spencer and Linda Stover of Polk; grandchildren, Shawn (Sarah) Crites, Renae (Justin) Crites, LeeAnn (Chris) Hastings and Heather (Cody) Wingard and great-grandchildren, Kobe and Lene Crites and Preston and Parker Hastings; brother, Jim (Dawn) Barry of Long Island, New York; sister, Eleanor (Pete) Anderson of Maine and beloved cousin, Phyllis (Rich) Becker of New York. A private family service will be held. Her ashes will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wadsworth.
