High school tennis: Chloe Porter, Emily Guenther get in work as Wadsworth beats Brunswick

BRUNSWICK — Chloe Porter and Emily Guenther are trying to improve point to point, game to game, set to set and match to match while getting reacclimated to playing together again. The first doubles team did just that Wednesday as the Wadsworth girls tennis team recorded a 4-1 non-league victory over Brunswick at Neura Park. In just their second match together this season — Guenther was the Grizzlies' first singles player for most of the year — the duo downed Gillian Brown and Clarissa Feitl 6-2, 6-1. Porter and Guenther dropped two of the first three games before finding their groove and winning 11 of the last 12. "Emily and I have played matches together since our freshman year," senior Porter said. "She just turned into a singles player over the years and I stayed at doubles, but we have pretty good chemistry. "Our weakness is definitely that we haven't played together very long this year," she added after the duo improved to 2-0. "As you play together longer, you recognize each other's strengths and weaknesses. She has very good groundstrokes from being a singles player and I have good doubles movement. When you put those together, it really helps you win a match." The Grizzlies (13-5) also got points from second singles player Lauren Ball, who beat Jessica Bisesar 6-3, 6-2, No. 3 Lizzy Edwards, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Mackenzie Daugherty, and the second doubles team of Hayden Hassinger and Sophia Fry, which downed Sydney Estok and Julia Hilke 6-3, 6-1. Brunswick (5-14) got its lone point from first singles player Calista Bobula, who will be the fourth seed next week at the Springside Division I Sectional. Bobula won 6-0, 6-0 against Allie McCall, who moved from second to first singles so Guenther and Porter, who will play doubles together in the postseason, could get some work in prior to the sectional. A year ago, the unseeded Guenther and Porter won two sectional matches before losing in the quarterfinals, meaning they fell one victory shy of a Springside District berth. The tandem will be unseeded again this year — Highland 2020 state doubles qualifiers Sarah Sgambati and Maddie Pawlak are the top-seeded team and the Hornets' Jo Oberhaus and Ally Haynes are No. 3 — but remains hopeful of grabbing one of the four district berths. "I'm hoping we make it to disricts," Porter said. "That's our goal since we came so close last year." For Brunswick, seniors Bobula, Bisesar, Daugherty, Brown and Feitl were playing the last home match of their high school careers. After her win, an emotional Bobula stayed on the court for 20 minutes talking to friends and family members through a fence before collecting her match scorecard and exiting for the final time. Daugherty stayed on the court the longest for the Blue Devils, as her third singles match with Edwards lasted almost two hours. "It feels really weird and also sad," she said of her last home match. "The last four years I've been playing here and it became part of my routine. I haven't really processed it yet, but it's really going to hit me when the season is over."
